Labour’s Sarah Champion Claims Sitting MPs Could ‘In Some Way’ Be Linked To Child Abuse<\/b>
\nLabour MP Sarah Champion has alleged sitting MPs could \u201cin some way or another\u201d be involved with child abuse.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the House magazine, Champion argued abuse is \u201calways about power\u201d and it did \u201cnot take a conspiracy theorist\u201d to realise how sitting MPs could abuse their power.<\/p>\n

The MP went on to claim that ex-Prime Minister David Cameron understood the need to take on child sexual abuse because he is a father, but the issue has dropped off Theresa May\u2019s \u201cradar\u201d.<\/p>\n

Champion also said Westminster would not handle fresh allegations of child abuse any better than it did in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould a child sex<\/a> abuse scandal be dealt with differently now? I don\u2019t know that it would,\u201d said Champion, whose Rotherham constituency was at the centre of a child abuse scandal.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne in 20 children will have a sexual assault against them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look at something inappropriate happening to them that drops dramatically to one in four girls<\/a> and one in eight boys<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat might be inappropriate language or made to feel uncomfortable or in a compromising situation – not necessarily being physically groped.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, there is no way that there aren\u2019t people who are sitting MPs who aren\u2019t involved in some way or another or a member of their family is.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, that\u2019s just the reality and I know that\u2019s very uncomfortable and no one wants to think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not the first time the Rotherham MP has made startling claims about abuse.<\/p>\n

Last year she was forced to resign as Shadow Equalities Minister\u00a0after writing a newspaper column in which she described the \u201cproblem\u201d of white girls<\/a> being raped by British Pakistani men<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cI do not feel with this government that (tackling child sexual abuse) is a priority at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid Cameron got it and I think he got it because I went to him as a dad rather than going to him as a politician.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheresa May was great when she was Home Secretary and then as soon as she shifted to PM it\u2019s dropped off the radar. It\u2019s clearly not a priority for them. It\u2019s someone else\u2019s problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Champion went on to say that she believed until female<\/a> genital mutilation (FGM) is viewed as child abuse, people will always \u201cturn the other cheek\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cUntil we start viewing it in terms of child abuse and gendered violence we always give people a get out, or we always find that we turn the other cheek.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, it\u2019s the same as Rotherham. We don\u2019t want to be seen as being culturally insensitive.\u201d
