‘Peter Rabbit’ Film Criticised For Showing ‘Food Allergy Bullying’<\/b><\/p>\n

The new \u2018Peter Rabbit\u2019 movie has faced criticism from\u00a0allergy<\/a> suffers over a scene in which characters deliberately pelt an allergic man<\/a> with blackberries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

American allergy organisation Kids With Food Allergies Foundation<\/a>, who saw the scene ahead of the film\u2019s cinematic release,\u00a0made others aware of what happened on Facebook on 10 February, writing: \u201cThe new movie, Peter Rabbit, has a scene that may be disturbing to young viewers who have a food allergy.<\/p>\n

\u201cA character is intentionally attacked with his allergen, leading to anaphylaxis and the use of epinephrine [medication reversing allergy reactions].<\/p>\n

\u201cParents should be aware of this before your children see the movie so you can talk with your child(ren) about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The organisation went on to say they believe food allergy jokes are \u201charmful\u201d, adding: \u201cDuring a reaction, patients require the life-saving drug epinephrine and must go to the nearest hospital for follow-up treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe very real fear and anxiety that people experience during an allergic reaction (often referred to as an impending sense of doom) is a serious matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking light of this condition hurts our members because it encourages the public not to take the risk of allergic reactions seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to their concerns,\u00a0the organisation wrote a letter to Sony Pictures and the makes of the film, which they posted on their website<\/a>. They are calling for the scene to be withdrawn from the film, which is set to air in the UK in March 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Carla Jones, CEO of Allergy UK<\/a> called the scene \u201cunacceptable\u201d, saying in a statement: \u201cAnaphylaxis can and does kill. To include a scene in a children\u2019s film that includes a serious allergic reaction and not to do it responsibly is unacceptable, as is bullying.<\/p>\n

\u201cMocking an allergic disease shows a complete lack of understanding of the seriousness of food allergy and trivialises the challenges faced by those who live<\/a> with this condition, particularly parents who live<\/a> in fear of their child suffering a life threatening reaction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be communicating with the production company about the film\u2019s withdrawal.\u201d<\/p>\n

A petition was also started on Change.org<\/a> to get the scene cut from the film, attracting nearly 10,000 signatures at the time of writing. People also expressed their views of the scene on Twitter, using the hashtag #BoycottPeterRabbit<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the BBC<\/a>, Sony Pictures and the filmmakers have apologised for the scene: \u201cWe sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologise.\u201d<\/p>\n

HuffPost UK<\/a> has contacted Sony Pictures about their response to calls<\/a> to remove the scene from the film and will update this piece on their response.\u00a0<\/p>\n
