George Soros is to pump an extra\u00a0\u00a3100,000 into the campaign to halt a \u2018hard Brexit\u2019 as a direct result of newspaper-led attacks on his financial interventions.<\/p>\n

Billionaire philanthropist Soros<\/a>\u00a0was accused of leading a \u201csecret plot\u201d\u00a0to undermine Brexit in a front-page article in the Telegraph.<\/p>\n

The Daily Mail\u2019s front page the next day<\/a> told Soros to \u201cbutt<\/a> out\u201d of Brexit, saying: \u201cYou can keep your tainted money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Soros and his foundations have offered to match-fund further small donations up to \u00a3100,000 to the Best for Britain group, which wants to keep Britain in the European Union.\u00a0Soros has already spent\u00a0\u00a3400,000 on the campaign.<\/p>\n

He told The Guardian<\/a>: \u201cI am happy to take the fight to those who have tried to use a smear campaign, not arguments, to prop up their failing case.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowdfunding push has raised \u00a359,625 so far.\u00a0Best for Britain\u2019s CEO Eloise Todd said: \u201cWe live<\/a> in a democracy, and the right to freedom of speech is precious. Elements of the right-wing press don\u2019t seem to agree.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK\u2019s future with the EU is not a done deal, there is still a vote to come and people across the country deserve to know the truth about the options on the table: one of which is staying and leading in the EU.<\/p>\n
