{"id":63793,"date":"2018-02-08T04:15:27","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T09:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/teachers-should-ask-children-if-they-are-suicidal-says-charity-boss\/"},"modified":"2018-02-08T04:15:27","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T09:15:27","slug":"teachers-should-ask-children-if-they-are-suicidal-says-charity-boss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/teachers-should-ask-children-if-they-are-suicidal-says-charity-boss\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers Should Ask Children If They Are Suicidal, Says Charity Boss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Teachers Should Ask Children If They Are Suicidal, Says Charity Boss<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/news\/teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teachers<\/a> should be prepared to ask school <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/news\/children\/\" target=\"_blank\">children<\/a> if they are suicidal if they notice a change in their behaviour, a charity boss has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Ged Flynn, chief executive of suicide prevention group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papyrus-uk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Papyrus<\/a>, said school staff should not feel embarrassed or scared to ask children about their mental health as part of a drive to cut self-harm and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/news\/depression\/\" target=\"_blank\">depression<\/a> among young people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It comes as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/cyberbullying-suicide-children_uk_5a783dc5e4b0905433b67821?snj\" target=\"_blank\">latest figures from the charity show children as young as nine are seeking help<\/a> with thoughts of suicide, with up to 40% of 11-18-year-olds contacting the charity\u2019s HOPELineUK service complaining of being cyber-bullied.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Flynn said teachers should be \u201copen\u201d rather than \u201cblunt\u201d, but said it was important for adults to \u201cjoin the conversation\u201d because children \u201cwill already be talking about it\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/5a7c11192100003800600954.jpeg\" data-caption=\"\" alt=\"\" data-credit=\"Ged Flynn chief executive of the Papyrus suicide prevention charity Papyrus \/ PA handout\" data-portal-copyright=\"Ged Flynn chief executive of the Papyrus suicide prevention charity Papyrus \/ PA handout\" data-provider=\"Other\" data-provider-asset-id=\"206105869\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"false\"><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Press Association, Mr Flynn said: \u201cChildren may not know the word \u2018suicide\u2019, so I\u2019m not frightening teachers into doing an assembly on suicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I am saying don\u2019t be frightened of using that word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re worried about a young person, the reality is they\u2019re already talking about it in their peer group. Get over yourselves, talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re more likely to engage with you when they are struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flynn said there was a need for sensitivity, and to use age-appropriate language when talking to young children who may not fully understand the permanence of death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>Children may not know the word \u2018suicide\u2019, so I\u2019m not frightening teachers into doing an assembly on suicide.&#8221;<\/span><span>Ged Flynn, chief executive of suicide prevention group Papyrus<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Flynn said it was crucial to shatter the taboo of suicide by engaging with children about the concept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe burden on schools is clear if we want them to be teaching, social working and counselling,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a tall order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m not asking teachers to take on an extra burden, I\u2019m saying acknowledge what good stuff you\u2019re already doing \u2013 acknowledge that you\u2019re already engaging readily as the PE teacher with the young lad who aspires to be the Welsh rugby team captain, or the England football team manager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re already doing great rapport-building with him.\u00a0If he changes his behaviour, ask him: this is not like you, are you thinking about suicide?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he\u2019s not, he knows that if he is he might come to you.
