‘Lady Doritos’ U-Turn: Here Are Five Other Products ‘For Women’ That Didn’t Need Inventing<\/b><\/p>\n

Crunch away to your heart\u2019s content because \u201cLady Doritos\u201d<\/a> will not be hitting supermarket shelves after all. The makers of Doritos, PepsiCo, said rumours circulating about the new product were \u201cinaccurate\u201d, adding: \u201cWe already have Doritos for women<\/a> \u2013 they\u2019re called Doritos, and they\u2019re enjoyed by millions of people every day\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The term \u201cLady Doritos\u201d began circulating online on Monday after PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi told\u00a0Freakonomics Radio<\/a>\u00a0women<\/a> worry about crunching loudly when eating crisps and long to fit packets into their handbags.\u00a0The CEO said the company was\u00a0\u201clooking at\u201d\u00a0the idea of \u201csnacks for women<\/a> that can be designed and packaged differently\u201d. She added: \u201cWe\u2019re getting ready to launch a bunch of them soon\u201d.<\/p>\n

But following the backlash of the concept, with many calling the idea of women<\/a>-specific snacks \u201csexist\u201d, it seems PepsiCo thought better of it. Quite frankly, we\u2019re glad to hear we won\u2019t be seeing another unnecessary gender-specific product on supermarket shelves. Here are five other \u201clady<\/a> products\u201d that should never have been invented. Surprise surprise, they\u2019re all pink.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a01.\u00a0 BIC for Her<\/h4>\n

Who could forget the now-infamous BIC for Her<\/a>?\u00a0To save women<\/a> from the perils of writing with a blue pen, BIC launched the pink alternative in\u00a0<\/a>2012. Following a eyebrow-raising advert<\/a>, the pink pen was called out for being \u201csexist\u201d at the time, but BIC claimed the product had \u201cproved to be very popular\u201d.<\/p>\n

2. Aurosa #BeerForHer<\/h4>\n

Entrepreneur Martina Smirova launched #BeerForHer<\/a> under the brand Aurosa last year. The product was supposedly meant to empower women<\/a> to drink beer while embracing their feminine selves, but it was called \u201cpatronising\u201d on Twitter. In response to criticism Smirova said she \u201cnever intended to dictate what women<\/a> should or shouldn\u2019t drink\u201d, adding: \u201cWe are simply a brand that wants to offer beer in an elegant and beautiful bottle, something that has not been done before.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. KitchenAid For Women<\/h4>\n

In 2017 appliance brand KitchenAid came under fire for an advert featuring pink products accompanied by the slogan \u2018KitchenAid for Women\u2019<\/a>.\u00a0In response to the criticism, KitchenAid clarified the ad was created to highlight the \u2018Cook for the Cure\u2019 program, which raises funds for breast cancer research. However, the company apologised for any offence caused by the wording and removed the ad.<\/p>\n

4. SEAT Mii<\/h4>\n

Launched in 2016, SEAT\u2019s Mii<\/a> was designed in partnership with Cosmopolitan magazine and was supposedly meant to\u00a0\u201cconnect with modern women<\/a>\u201d. Its \u201csurprise sparkle\u201d and \u201ceyeliner-shaped headlights\u201d failed to hit the mark with men<\/a> and women<\/a> on Twitter though, with many pointing out cars do not need to be gender-specific.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2016 a team of entrepreneurs created the \u2018LadyBall\u2019<\/a>, a pink football designed to make the \u201cmasculine world of sports\u201d accessible to women<\/a>. Many on social media speculated the product was actually a joke, but the makers did not confirm or deny this. Either way, as some at the time pointed out \u201cwomen<\/a>\u2019s sport is still the punchline\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
