A 20-year-old English man<\/a> who came out as bisexual<\/a> while on trial for allegedly planning to launch an attack at a Pride event last year has been convicted of plotting terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n Ethan Stables denied plotting to carry out a machete attack at the event in Barrow, Cumbria, UK in June 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n Stables told the court he is bisexual<\/a> after the jury watched a video<\/a> of him saying \u201cgays<\/a> look nicer on fire\u201d before burning a rainbow flag.<\/span><\/p>\n Metro<\/b><\/a> reported:<\/span><\/p>\n He told the jury: \u2018I am disgusted and ashamed at myself for what I said. I just wish I could turn the clock back. I\u2019m sorry.\u2019 Stables\u2019 godfather Phillip Loveless, who is gay<\/a>, took to the stand at Leeds Crown Court to say that he had no reason to believe that his godson was homophobic.<\/span><\/p>\n He said: \u2018I have a sixth sense for that sort of thing.\u2019 He said that he was a loner as a child adding \u2018It became clear very early on that he wasn\u2019t developing entirely normally. \u2018He preferred to be on his own. There was never any problem with his intellectual capacity but when he was asked not to do something he would be very adamant that he wasn\u2019t going to stop doing that thing.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n Loveless added that Stables was interested in fantasy and escapism. \u201cI felt he did go off on paranoid fantasies,\u201d he said. \u201cHe would get very fixated on certain ideas. On one level it seemed totally bizarre [when he was arrested] but on another level we had all been waiting for something to happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Guardian<\/em> reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n Armed police swooped on Stables on 23 June as he walked towards the New Empire pub in Barrow, Cumbria, which was hosting a gay<\/a> pride event. He was unarmed when he was arrested, but police later found an axe and a machete at his home.<\/p>\n Officers had received a tip-off from a member of a far-right Facebook group where Stables posted a message saying he was \u201cgoing to war\u201d and that he planned to \u201cslaughter every single one of the gay<\/a> bastards\u201d.<\/p>\n After he was arrested, police found Stables had made internet searches for \u201chow to make chemical poison\u201d, \u201cwhat is prison like for a murderer\u201d, \u201cI want to go on a killing spree\u201d and \u201cdo you get haircuts in prison\u201d.<\/p>\n The jury was shown a video<\/a> of him burning a rainbow flag and posing next to a swastika hanging on his bedroom wall.
