{"id":63411,"date":"2018-02-04T12:15:23","date_gmt":"2018-02-04T17:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/sunday-shows-round-up-snake-oil-salesmen-ministers-rift-over-customs-deal-and-katie-price\/"},"modified":"2018-02-04T12:15:23","modified_gmt":"2018-02-04T17:15:23","slug":"sunday-shows-round-up-snake-oil-salesmen-ministers-rift-over-customs-deal-and-katie-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/sunday-shows-round-up-snake-oil-salesmen-ministers-rift-over-customs-deal-and-katie-price\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Shows Round-Up: &#8216;Snake Oil Salesmen&#8217;, Ministers&#8217; Rift Over Customs Deal And Katie Price"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Sunday Shows Round-Up: &#8216;Snake Oil Salesmen&#8217;, Ministers&#8217; Rift Over Customs Deal And Katie Price<\/b><br \/>\nAs reports emerge that Theresa May is set to face a Brexiteer challenge to her premiership, her ministers went before the <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">cameras<\/a> to do battle &#8211; with each other.<\/p>\n<p>Home Secretary Amber Rudd and Housing Minister Dominic Raab offered opposing views on what the UK would reach a customs deal with the EU within minutes of one another.<\/p>\n<p>Rudd insisted Theresa May was \u201copen minded\u201d on a deal \u201cwithin the customs framework\u201d, on the Andrew Marr Show, while Raab told Robert Peston later the UK would not be staying in a customs union of \u201cany form\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It comes ahead of ministerial crunch talks on Brexit this week and as reports emerged that Brexiteers were lining up a \u201cdream team\u201d &#8211; Boris Johnson as PM, Michael Gove as Deputy PM and Jacob Rees-Mogg as Chancellor &#8211; to replace May should she try to keep Britain in the customs union with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>But it was a day of divisions on the Sunday shows, with Labour big hitters also at loggerheads.<\/p>\n<p>The Andrew Marr Show<\/p>\n<p>Former leader of Labour-run Haringey Council, Clare Kober, who resigned\u00a0last week citing bullying and sexism from members of her own party\u00a0was first up on the BBC Andrew Marr Show.<\/p>\n<p>Significantly, she told Marr that she had not raised complaints about bullying with he party\u2019s ruling body, the National Executive Committee, as she had no faith its members would act on the complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Her controversial plan for a public-private housing deal, the Haringey Development Vehicle &#8211; which Jeremy Corbyn hinted he viewed as a form of \u201csocial cleansing\u201d &#8211; now looks to be dead in the water after the NEC intervened to pause it.<\/p>\n<p>Leader of @haringeycouncil@ClaireKober tells #marr that in the last two years, she has experienced &#8220;threats, bullying, intimidation and sexism&#8221; &#8220;I don&#8217;t believe a <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">man<\/a> would have been treated the same way&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/pic.twitter.com\/83aA0fALYf\u2014\" class=\"autohyperlink\">pic.twitter.com\/83aA0fALYf\u2014<\/a> The Andrew Marr Show (@MarrShow) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nKober also recounted some disturbing incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last two years, my experience has been that I have experienced more threats, more bullying, more intimidation than in the previous eight years put together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely sexist and that runs from the way I was treated by the National Executive Committee just last week, and I don\u2019t believe a <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">man<\/a> would have been treated the same way, through to examples in council meetings where party members have shouted at me and sung a Police song \u2018Every Breath You Take\u2019 as a means of intimidating me &#8211; that is a song about stalking. A <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">man<\/a> would not have been treated that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former NEC member and Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth, speaking later on the BBC Sunday Politics show, said it sounded to him like Kober has legitimate complaints.<\/p>\n<p>.@JonAshworth suggests @ClaireKober should report her complaints to the NEC. &#8220;But you&#8217;ve reached a point where a senior member in the party doesn&#8217;t trust the NEC to sort this out because she thinks they&#8217;re part of the problem, not the answer&#8221; says @BBCsarahsmith#bbcsppic.twitter.com\/ofcxG9Wv7c\u2014 BBC Daily Politics and Sunday Politics (@daily_politics) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nAshworth, who until 18 months ago was a member of the NEC, said the body \u201cwould look at that very seriously\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said, however, that \u201ca substantial number of councillors on Haringey asked the NEC to intervene\u201d and \u201cit\u2019s clear that there\u2019s two sides of the story and both feel extremely strongly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added anyone found to have expressed anti-semitic views would be thrown out of the Labour Party.<\/p>\n<p>Next up was former Business Secretary Vince Cable.<\/p>\n<p>The Lib Dems are one of the only parties united on Brexit, said Cable, who insisted he is enjoying his job as party leader, reminding Andrew Marr that a year ago, he was not even an elected politician.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are winning the public argument which is having a vote on the final deal&#8221; @vincecable says he is urging Labour and Jeremy Corbyn to support this position too #marrpic.twitter.com\/2YXuyYr5NO\u2014 The Andrew Marr Show (@MarrShow) February 4, 2018<br \/>\n\u201cWe are winning the public argument, which is essentially that we have a vote on the final deal and I am very comfortable that we are in the right place.<\/p>\n<p>\u2033I\u2019m currently trying to press the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn in particular to come out and support this position, which most of his supporters wished he had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cable said that the Government was \u201cmaking a terrible mess of the negotiations\u201d but admitted there had been little movement in public support for Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Marr put it to Cable that unless Corbyn\u2019s Labour Party was supportive of backing a vote on the final deal, the policy was a \u201cdead duck\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cable disagreed and claimed Corbyn will eventually come under \u201cenormous pressure\u201d to change his position as there was a \u201csimmering anger\u201d among pro-Remain Labour MPs and members.<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams described Corbyn as an \u201coutstanding politician\u201d and backed the Labour leader as the next PM.<\/p>\n<p>Brexit was \u201cdisastrous\u201d for all of the island of Ireland, said Adams, and he still believes a deal can be reached to restore devolution at Stormont.<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn and Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell have previously faced criticism over their past dealings with Sinn Fein, including an occasion when they met the party at Westminster in the 1990s, before the IRA ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Adams said Corbyn and former mayor Ken Livingstone were among the politicians who \u201ckept faith\u201d in peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>He told Marr: \u201cI would like to see Jeremy in that position [as PM] for the benefit of people in Britain, leaving Ireland out of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Jeremy is an outstanding politician and I hope my endorsement of him is not used against him in the time ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe and (former London Mayor) Ken Livingstone and others kept faith and they were the people who said, when others said no, talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked why he had not joined the IRA in the past, Adams said: \u201cI have never distanced myself from the IRA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next up was Home Secretary Amber Rudd, who insisted to Marr the Government was \u201cnot intimidated\u201d by Brexiteers in her party.<\/p>\n<p>.@AmberRuddHR says Britain will &#8220;absolutely grow&#8221; after Brexit &#8220;depending on the actions we take&#8221; &#8220;The wealth of a country is not made entirely by trade&#8221; #marrpic.twitter.com\/zH7l8LxQa3\u2014 The Andrew Marr Show (@MarrShow) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nAmid reports of a plot brewing against the PM, she said: \u201cI have surprise for the Brexiteers which is the (Cabinet) sub committee that meets in order to help make these decisions is more united than they think.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe meet in the committee. We meet privately for discussions. I think that we will arrive at something which suits us all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be choices to be made within that but we all want the same thing which is to arrive at a deal which works for the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also said that the Government would back staying in a kind of customs arrangement &#8211; something later strongly refuted by her colleague Dominic Raab &#8211; the housing minister.<\/p>\n<p>Rudd said:\u00a0\u201cShe [the PM] has an open mind on it. We published a document last year saying how we would do it and we proposed either a customs arrangement or a customs partnership. Those are both alternatives we could look at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former speeches on Brexit made by the PM were put to Rudd, and she said: \u201cI think what she is highlighting there is we do not want to have tariffs at the border so that is a form of customs agreement, arrangement, partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rees-Mogg has said he is \u201csuspicious\u201d of how Treasury officials operate,\u00a0and that their economic models, which show the UK will be worse off in every Brexit scenario bar remaining in the Customs Union, amount to \u201cfiddling the figures\u201d in favour of Remain.<\/p>\n<p>But Rudd came out in defence of civil servants, saying they had her \u201ccomplete confidence\u201d, before adding:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m very surprised at Jacob because he is famously courteous, famously thoughtful, famously articulate so I\u2019m very surprised that he has used that language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are wrong, he is wrong here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also responded to criticism of Brexit minister Steve Baker, who last week aired a false claim in the House of Commons about a think tank\u2019s boss claiming Treasury officials were pro-Remain.<\/p>\n<p>Rudd said:\u00a0I think that Steve Baker has had an interesting week this week, when he also, over the whole debate about what was said when, was gracious enough to issue an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One particular report in the Sunday papers said that Rudd would become Chancellor in a Government led by Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Replying to whether Rudd could serve under Johnson, she said:\u00a0\u201cThat is such a difficult question on so many different levels, I\u2019m going to pass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peston on Sunday<\/p>\n<p>After a bruising week for Treasury officials, Robert Peston\u2019s first interview was with Lord Gus O\u2019Donnell, the former head of the UK Civil Service.<\/p>\n<p>Former Cabinet Secretary @Gus_ODonnell unimpressed by Brexiteer attacks on the civil service: &#8220;if you&#8217;re selling snake oil you don\u2019t like the experts testing your product&#8221; #Pestonpic.twitter.com\/swOUN5YweS\u2014 Peston on Sunday (@pestononsunday) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nHe labelled claims civil servants were working to sabotage Brexit \u201ccompletely crazy\u201d, comparing Brexiteers to \u201csnake oil salesmen\u201d who, instead of accepting objective analysis on the economy, were trying to \u201cshoot the messenger\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is civil servants operate by the civil service code,\u201d he said. \u201cThe values are honesty, objectivity, integrity, impartiality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir job is to look at the evidence and present it as best they can, analyse the uncertainties &#8230; but that\u2019s what they do, they\u2019re objective and impartial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think what you find is that tends to get accepted very nicely when it agrees with someone\u2019s prior beliefs, but actually, when someone doesn\u2019t like the answer, quite often they decide to shoot the messenger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be like you and I negotiating with you knowing exactly what you want and I haven\u2019t got a clue. You\u2019re going to win.\u201d .@Gus_ODonnell urges Theresa May and the Government to soon decide what they want from Brexit. #Pestonpic.twitter.com\/udNbbIZXWW\u2014 Peston on Sunday (@pestononsunday) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nHe said the civil service seemed to be facing \u201cone of the most sustained attacks\u201d on its integrity in living memory by serving ministers, before adding: \u201cWe look at the evidence and we go where it is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course if you are selling snake oil, you don\u2019t like the idea of experts testing your products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think that\u2019s what we\u2019ve got, this backlash against evidence and experts is because they know where the experts will go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next up was Shadow Attorney General Shami Chakrabarti who,\u00a0after hearing Kober\u2019s remarks on the Andrew Marr Show, admitted the Labour Party must do more to shift sexism and antisemitism from the party.<\/p>\n<p>She insisted, however, that any report made to the NEC would be investigated.<\/p>\n<p>On the weekend marking 100 years since <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> got the vote, Chakbrabarti was also asked about the gender pay gap at the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if she thought the Director General Tony Hall should resign, she said: \u201cI don\u2019t think he has done enough [to tackle the pay gap], I will say that, but I don\u2019t feel like calling for anyone\u2019s demise today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peston then interviewed Dominic Raab, Housing Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to speculation about a post-Brexit customs union with the EU, @DominicRaab insists the government have been clear: we are leaving. #Pestonpic.twitter.com\/KlLsASJVUy\u2014 Peston on Sunday (@pestononsunday) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nHe was categorical that the PM would not support the UK remaining in a customs union &#8211; directly contradicting government colleague Rudd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ll be in any form of customs union, at least as conceived in international trade practice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if we were we would have our hands tied in negotiating free trade deals with other parts of the world, whether it\u2019s Brazil, whether it\u2019s China or India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prime Minister has been very clear we want to be able to grasp those opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>.@DominicRaab says there is not a \u201cfag paper\u201d between members of the Cabinet on the matter of negotiating third party trade deals. #Pestonpic.twitter.com\/3tWstFEUSA\u2014 Peston on Sunday (@pestononsunday) February 4, 2018<br \/>\nHe also insisted there were no divisions within the party on trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u2033I\u2019m pretty sure I haven\u2019t said anything about resignation to anyone in the media or otherwise, and I\u2019m not talking about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons, one of the key advantages, one of the opportunities from leaving the EU is to have a more energetic approach to free trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PM has been in favour of that all along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to May\u2019s journey to China and creating a Department for International Trade as evidence, adding: \u201cThere is absolutely not a fag paper between anyone on that issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to Kober\u2019s interview on Marr, Labour MP Stella Creasy said: \u201cI think a lot of us have concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI myself know how difficult it is to complain when you are a target for this stuff. I\u2019ve seen it in my local community.
