Jacob Rees-Mogg Doubles Down On Claim Civil Servants Are Manipulating Brexit Figures In Heated Exchange<\/b>
\nJacob Rees-Mogg has doubled down on his claim that civil servants are manipulating figures to discourage the Government from Brexit, in a heated on-air exchange.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think they\u2019re fiddling the figures,\u201d the Brexiteer MP told BBC Radio Four\u2019s Today programme, after he was accused of suggesting this in the House of Commons without evidence.<\/p>\n

Host Nick Robinson had put it to Rees Mogg that his accusation was\u00a0\u201cnot the behaviour of a man<\/a> who wishes to lead this country\u201d, adding the \u201ceccentric backbencher\u201d was now being talked about as a future prime minister.<\/p>\n

Charles Grant, the think tank chief to whom Rees-Mogg originally attributed the claim, also criticised Rees-Mogg for not apologising for misquoting him, as Brexit Minister Steve Baker had.<\/p>\n

On Today,\u00a0Grant said Baker showed he was an \u201chonourable man<\/a>\u201d but added he was \u201csurprised\u201d Rees-Mogg had not also apologised.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Rees-Mogg said Grant, head of think tank The Centre For European Reform, had told Baker that \u201cofficials in the Treasury had deliberately developed a model to show that all options other than staying in the Customs Union were bad and that officials intended to use this to influence policy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The minister said was correct but a recording of Grant\u2019s remarks was later released, showing he had not said this.<\/p>\n

Robinson asked Rees-Mogg if he would apologise. The MP answered: \u201cThe only thing I\u2019ll apologise for is that it turned out to be much more serious than I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n

He hit out at officials for breaching the ministerial code, saying they were giving journalists pessimistic briefings about Brexit without their minister\u2019s permission.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith all forecasts, the assumptions you make at the beginning, determine the outcome that you get,\u201d he said, accusing the Treasury of trying to \u201cinvent policy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Grant said: \u201cThe Treasury\u2019s not trying to undermine the government policy… Once you decide to leave the EU, you can consider various ways of doing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Treasury cares about economics so is naturally pushing for the sorts of Brexit that minimise the economic damage… Many people the Treasury think we should for go that less damaging option.\u201d<\/p>\n

He dismissed Rees-Mogg\u2019s attack on officials for briefing him about Brexit. He added: \u201cOf course everybody in think tanks speaks to govern officials. That\u2019s how think tanks work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robinson said Rees-Mogg was \u201can amusing backbench eccentric\u201d but was now \u201cthe leading figure in terms of backbench Brexiteers and many ministers say you\u2019re a likely candidate to be our next Prime Minister\u201d.<\/p>\n

The host asked \u201cDo you not accept that to accuse civil servants of rigging official forecasts is not the behaviour of a man<\/a> who wishes to lead this country?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rees-Mogg said The Treasury\u2019s pre-Brexit referendum forecasts were \u201ca humiliation\u201d and \u201cclearly politically influenced\u201d.<\/p>\n

When Robinson pushed him on whether they were rigged, Rees-Mogg said: \u201cThe Office for Budget Responsibility was set up by George Osborne because Treasury forecasts had been politicised and it was thought they were unreliable on political grounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the referendum with the EU, the Treasury has gone back to making forecasts. It was politically advantageous for them.\u00a0So yes, I do think they are fiddling the figures.\u201d
