Beijing\u2019s Communist Government certainly rolled out a carpet as red as the national flag on Thursday when Theresa May and her husband Philip were hosted by President Xi Jinping and his wife as part of their three-day tour.<\/p>\n

The state-run media was keen to highlight the warm reception apparently given to the couple<\/a> on the social media site Sina Weibo, with members of the public praising the PM\u2019s \u201cbeautiful marriage\u201d and her \u201cvery handsome\u201d spouse.<\/p>\n

One article published by the Xinhua News Agency\u00a0(and shared on China\u2019s equivalent of Twitter) said: \u201cHe is the man<\/a> who loved her, supported her, and protected her, who has been there for 40 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

China Plus, the government-owned English language channel, carried uncannily uniform footage of young people heaping on the praise. One paid tribute to May for not being \u201ca stereotype of a female<\/a> politician\u201d because she has \u201ca good sense of fashion\u201d, adding \u201cshe loves leopard print!\u201d<\/p>\n

A particularly enthusiastic youngster listed the PM\u2019s achievements, declaring \u201cShe made great efforts to solve terrorism, disputes with Northern Ireland, and Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n

And all of the students revealed the British guest\u2019s new nickname. \u201c\u2019Auntie May\u2019 is a warm expression, just like we call<\/a> Xi Jinping \u2018Uncle Xi\u2019 to show our fondness,\u201d one said. \u201cThey all call<\/a> her \u2018Auntie May\u2019, so do I,\u201d said another. And in case we hadn\u2019t got the message, yet another added: \u201cIt\u2019s a friendly name we feel close to.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the Mays visited Beijing\u2019s ancient Forbidden City, an interviewer from state-run Chinese television\u00a0 – the aptly named CCTV – told the PM of her new moniker, pointing out it was unusual for foreign politicians to be granted such informality.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of Chinese people would affectionately call<\/a> you, in Chinese, \u2018Auntie May\u2019,\u201d the interviewer said. \u201cThat\u2019s really a kind of a call<\/a> for Chinese \u2013 you\u2019re one of the members of the family. Do you like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Clearly unused to such plaudits, a slightly surprised Prime Minister replied: \u201cOh thank you, thank very much indeed\u2026I\u2019m honoured by that. Thank you.\u201d Her gratitude was so earnest, she named it thrice.<\/p>\n

May then held an 80-minute bilateral meeting with President Xi in the Diaoyutai State Guest House.<\/p>\n

The pair agreed a joint trade and investment review that British sources later suggested was the first step towards a post-Brexit deal, though the details were unclear.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s markets would also be further opened to the UK, including in sectors such as beef (banned since the 1990s because of BSE fears), dairy and other agricultural goods.<\/p>\n

The main thing was that Chairman May\u2019s hosts were impressed. And after all, they are the ones with the big bucks and trade the UK is hoping to target after Brexit.
