Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, and Andrew Rannells<\/a> are set to headline a 15-week revival of Mart Crowley\u2019s groundbreaking 1968 play The Boys in the Band<\/em><\/a>, which centers on a group of gay<\/a> men<\/a> who gather in a NYC apartment for a friend\u2019s birthday party.<\/p>\n

Also starring are Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington and Tuc Watkins. The 50th anniversary production will be directed by Joe Mantello at the Booth Theatre.<\/p>\n

The cast recently got together for a photo shoot and shot a featurette talking about the play\u2019s significance and what it means today.<\/p>\n

After the drinks are poured and the music turned up, the evening slowly exposes the fault-lines beneath their friendships and the self-inflicted heartache that threatens their solidarity.\u00a0 A true theatrical game-changer,\u00a0The Boys in the Band<\/i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>helped spark a revolution by putting gay<\/a> men<\/a>\u2019s lives onstage \u2014 unapologetically and without judgement \u2013 in a world that was not yet willing to fully accept them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe significance of\u00a0The Boys in the Band<\/i>\u00a0cannot be underestimated.\u00a0 In 1968, Mart Crowley made theatrical history by giving voice to gay<\/a> men<\/a> onstage, in this uncompromising, blisteringly honest, and wickedly funny play,\u201d said Ryan Murphy. \u201cThe play was groundbreaking in its exploration of how gay<\/a> men<\/a> treated each other and how they were made to feel about themselves.\u00a0 And while some attitudes have thankfully shifted, it\u2019s important to be reminded of what we have overcome and how much further we still have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

David Stone adds, \u201cEverything has changed.\u00a0 And nothing has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

A sensation when it premiered in April 1968,\u00a0The Boys in the Band<\/i>\u00a0was originally scheduled to run for five performances at the Playwrights\u2019 Unit, a small off-Broadway venue.\u00a0 Overnight, the show became the talk of the town for its unflinchingly honest depiction of gay<\/a> life, and transferred to Theater Four on West 55th<\/sup>\u00a0Street, drawing the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Marlene Dietrich, Groucho Marx, and Rudolf Nureyev, among many others.\u00a0 The play went on to run for over 1,000 performances.\u00a0 The entire original company performed the show to great acclaim in London and also appeared in William Friedkin\u2019s landmark 1970 film version.<\/p>\n
