Emmanuel Macron Calls Brexit Referendum A ‘Mistake’<\/b>
\nEmmanuel Macron has said he would \u201clove\u201d if Britain returned to the EU, adding the Brexit referendum was a \u201cmistake\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the interview with Andrew Marr, the French President said he respected the vote in the Brexit referendum but regretted it.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt\u2019s a mistake when you just ask \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019, when you don\u2019t ask people how to improve the situation and explain how to improve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the interview,\u00a0to be broadcast on Sunday, Marr asked if Brexit was inevitable.<\/p>\n

Macron said: \u201cI mean, it\u2019s on your own. It depends on you. I mean, I do respect this vote, I do regret this vote, and I would love to welcome you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added the arguments made for Remain during the referendum were \u201ctoo much favourable just for the City and less favourable for the rest of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

Macron also said Britain could have a \u201cspecial\u201d deal with the EU after Brexit but said the UK could not have full access to the Single Market without signing up to its preconditions, such as paying into the EU budget, accepting freedom of movement and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere should be no cherry-picking in the single market because that\u2019s a dismantling of the single market,\u201d\u00a0Macron told Marr.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as you decide not to join the preconditions, it\u2019s not a full access.\u201d<\/p>\n

British politicians including Jeremy Corbyn have called for the UK to retain \u201cfull access\u201d to the Single Market, which Theresa May\u2019s Government is committed to leaving.<\/p>\n

During his interview with Marr, Macron said it was important British politicians didn\u2019t mislead voters what is possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is important is to not make people believe that it is possible,\u201d Macron, said, at which point Marr interrupted with: \u201cTo have your cake and eat it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a reference to the line Boris Johnson said during the referendum campaign and when he endorsed a hard a Brexit.<\/p>\n

He insisted Brexit could mean retaining free trade perks while regaining control of immigration, telling The Sun: \u201cOur policy is having our cake and eating it…<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are Pro-secco but by no means anti-pasto.\u201d<\/p>\n

Macron told Marr full access for financial services to the Single Market \u201cis not feasible\u201d, adding France and other countries were competing for financial services.<\/p>\n

At a joint press conference in Sandhurst with Theresa May on Friday, Macron said a unique deal on Single Market access would be \u201chypocrisy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be no hypocrisy in this respect, otherwise it will not work or we would destroy the single market and its coherence,\u201d he said.
