\nIt seemed to start so well.\u00a0Theresa May was the first foreign leader Donald Trump met as president,\u00a0and their January meeting was so cosy it was defined by the moment they held hands as they walked down a set the stairs together.<\/p>\n
By December though things had fallen apart and May was forced, not for the first time, to publicly condemn him.<\/p>\n
On the first anniversary of Trump\u2019s inauguration, Britons could be forgiven for losing count of all the times the President has offended the UK in just 12 months. Thankfully, we haven\u2019t forgotten…<\/p>\n
Theresa May was just flying home from Washington when Trump signed an executive order banning travel to the US by citizens of seven Muslim countries. As chaos reigned at airports around the world and world leaders condemned the president,\u00a0the PM stayed silent.<\/p>\n
The Foreign Office feared it could affect Britons born in any of the seven countries, such as Somali-born Olympian Sir Mo Farah or Iraqi-born Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi, who called the order \u201ca sad day for the USA\u201d.<\/p>\n
Five days after the order was signed,\u00a0May finally told the Commons: \u201cThis government is clear that that policy is wrong. We wouldn\u2019t do it. We believe it is divisive and wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother beauty,\u201d Trump said of the BBC when its reporter Jon Sopel rose to ask a question at a bizarre press conference in February. When Sopel responded the BBC was \u201cfree and fair\u201d, Trump hit back: \u201cYeah, just like CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n
Given how much he hates the American broadcaster – he once tweeted a video<\/a> of himself wrestling a CNN logo to the ground\u00a0–\u00a0that is about the worst insult the president could give to one of Britain\u2019s premier cultural institutions.<\/p>\n Sopel joked he would get \u201canother beauty\u201d put on his business card and used the phrase as a promotional blurb on his book.<\/p>\n In March, Trump sent a series of tweets claiming Barack Obama ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower.<\/p>\n As the bizarre comment was repeated over several days, White House press secretary Sean Spicer repeated a media commentator\u2019s claim that British intelligence agency GCHQ was behind it.<\/p>\n In a rare public statement, the agency called the claim \u201cutterly ridiculous\u201d. Before the full picture was even close to emerging, Trump retweeted rightwing The Drudge Report\u2019s claim that a van had \u201cmowed down 20 people\u201d.<\/p>\n Refocussing attention on himself, Trump then used the still-developing incident to promote his travel ban, which he was then fighting the courts to implement.<\/p>\n We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. Rises in burglary and sexual offences\u00a0had contributed to the increase.
