Brit Awards 2018 Nominations: Our Predictions For This Year’s Show (Plus Who *Should* Win Each Category)<\/b>
\nThe nominations are out, the performers are (mostly) confirmed and the host has been revealed, meaning the countdown is on to this year\u2019s Brit Awards.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ve still got a little while to go until we found out who is taking home some of the most coveted awards in British music, but now we know who the contenders are, we\u2019ve put our thinking caps on, rounding up our predictions for this year\u2019s winners (as well as which artists we think\u00a0should\u00a0be honoured during the ceremony).<\/p>\n

British Male<\/p>\n
Nominees:\u00a0Ed Sheeran, Liam Gallagher, Loyle Carner, Rag\u2019n\u2019Bone Man, Stormzy<\/p>\n
Who will win?\u00a0Ed Sheeran. We\u2019re also looking forward to the inevitable tweet from Liam Gallagher when he doesn\u2019t win.<\/p>\n
Who should win?\u00a0Stormzy.\u00a0While there\u2019s no denying Ed\u2019s commercial success over the last 12 months, the actual story is a little different to what you may have been led to believe.<\/p>\n
\u2019\u00f7\u2019 was met with mixed reviews upon its release in 2017 and \u2018Galway Girl\u2019 was named by plenty as one of the year\u2019s most irritating singles, while his quest for the Christmas number one was met with rolled eyes from more cynical music fans.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Stormzy\u2019s rise to household name status in 2017 was truly something to behold. \u2018Big For Your Boots\u2019 made a big impact on the charts, he spoke out on important issues both in the music industry and beyond it, and gave some of the year\u2019s best TV performances on the MTV EMAs stage and on \u2018The X Factor\u2019. All this and more make him our top pick.<\/p>\n
British Female<\/p>\n
Nominees:\u00a0Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, Kate Tempest, Laura Marling, Paloma Faith<\/p>\n
Who will win?\u00a0Dua Lipa\u2019s pretty much a dead cert, right? She\u2019s the only one of this year\u2019s nominees to have bagged a number one single this year, her self-titled debut album was lauded by critics and the \u2018New Rules\u2019 music video<\/a> had people talking (we named it the eighth best of 2017).<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0Dua Lipa.\u00a0In truth, British Female is not the easiest category to get excited about this year, which is shocking considering winners in the past decade have been artists as important as Adele, Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse.<\/p>\n Based purely on how many times we\u2019ve watched the \u2018New Rules\u2019 video<\/a>, we\u2019ll go with Dua, but we\u2019re hoping the next 12 months sees a new flux of British female<\/a> talent, so we can avoid this situation in a year\u2019s time.<\/p>\n British Group<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0Gorillaz, London Grammar, Royal Blood, Wolf Alice, The xx<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0As the only past winners in this category, our money would be on Royal Blood.<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0Wolf Alice.\u00a0Honestly, it feels like everyone on this list could deserve it, but Wolf Alice are still the fairly new kids on the Brits block, having been up for British Breakthrough two years ago, so it\u2019d be nice to see them take home the prize for British Group in 2018.<\/p>\n British Breakthrough Act<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0Dave, Dua Lipa, J Hus, Loyle Carner, Sampha<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0Dua Lipa. We\u2019d argue it\u2019s actually been a good few years since her actual \u201cbreakthrough\u201d but there\u2019s no denying that \u2018New Rules\u2019 was the track that cemented her place on the British pop scene.<\/p>\n Plus, this is one of two votes that are decided by a public vote, and we can\u2019t imagine any of the other nominees\u2019 fans pushing as hard as Dua\u2019s.<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0J Hus.\u00a0Yeah, we\u2019d be happy for Dua to take it, especially as she\u2019s the only woman<\/a> who made the cut, but part of us is rooting for J Hus too.<\/p>\n International Male<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0Alicia Keys, Bj\u00f6rk, Lorde, P!nk, Taylor Swift<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0When we were making our Brits predictions earlier this month, this was the hardest category to narrow down to just five.<\/p>\n Alicia Keys\u2019 place on the shortlist was a particularly surprising one for us, considering her album came out at the end of 2016 and acts including SZA, St Vincent, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and Lana Del Rey all wound up missing out on the nomination, so we reckon she could be one to watch.<\/p>\n Who should win? Lorde. This is a strong category, but of the five acts on the shortlist, it\u2019s Lorde who has impressed us the most over the past 12 months. Her album \u2018Melodrama\u2019 was a nostalgic dream, her Glastonbury set was a highlight of the whole weekend and her music videos<\/a> have been characteristically intriguing and endearing.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s just not talk about that bizarre VMAs performance\u2026<\/p>\n International Group<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Haim, The Killers, LCD Soundsystem<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0On 10 January 2018, Foo Fighters announced that they were performing for the first time at this year\u2019s Brit Awards. On 13 January 2018, Foo Fighters were announced as one of five competitors for International Group at this year\u2019s Brit Awards. You do the maths.<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0Probably Foo Fighters.\u00a0That being said\u2026 2017 was a particularly huge year for a band that was already pretty huge to begin with, so if they do take home the Brit, we can\u2019t say we\u2019ll be too upset.<\/p>\n British Single Of The Year<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0*deep breath*\u00a0Calvin Harris – \u2018Feels\u2019, Clean Bandit – \u2018Symphony\u2019, Dua Lipa – \u2018New Rules\u2019, Ed Sheeran – \u2018Shape Of You\u2019, J Hus – \u2018Did You See\u2019, Jax Jones – \u2018You Don\u2019t Know Me\u2019, Jonas Blue – \u2018Mama\u2019, Liam Payne – \u2018Strip That Down\u2019, Little Mix – \u2018Touch\u2019, Rag\u2019n\u2019Bone Man – \u2018Human\u2019<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0Ed Sheeran – \u2018Shape Of You\u2019.\u00a0One of the toughest categories, we could see this going any number of ways. But for the sheer size of its success, we reckon Ed is going to be the one to beat.<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0Ed Sheeran – \u2018Shape Of You\u2019.\u00a0This is probably the hardest one to choose a favourite in.<\/p>\n Little Mix\u2019s \u2018Touch\u2019 immediately springs to mind (probably because it\u2019s been hard to get it out of her heads since we first heard it more than a year ago), while Clean Bandit\u2019s \u2018Symphony\u2019 made us want to dance and shed a tear all at the same time.<\/p>\n That said, \u2018Shape Of You\u2019 was quite literally the Single Of The Year, so if Ed does end up bagging the Brit, we\u2019d be hard pressed to find an argument against it.<\/p>\n British Album Of The Year<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0Dua Lipa – \u2018Dua Lipa\u2019, Ed Sheeran – \u2018\u00f7\u2019, J Hus – \u2018Common Sense\u2019, Rag\u2019n\u2019Bone Man – \u2018Human\u2019, Stormzy – \u2018Gang Signs & Prayer\u2019<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0They\u2019re not going to bring Ed Sheeran out all that way and not give him the biggest award of the night, are they?<\/p>\n An album so impactful they literally rewrote the rules of the charts to accommodate it, \u2019\u00f7\u2019 hit the number one spot in 14 countries (including the UK, obv) and was 2017\u2019s highest-selling album. No matter what you think of Ed\u2019s music, there\u2019s little you can do to argue with those numbers.<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0Stormzy – \u2018Gang Signs & Prayer\u2019.\u00a0Despite its success, should the winner of one of the most prestigious titles in British music go to an album that was so divisive among music critics? Particularly when you\u2019ve got Stormzy offering \u2018Gang Signs & Prayer\u2019, an album that had people talking in 2017 for the right reasons, whether it was about his admirable work ethic, the wide range of topics covered on the album or the cross-genre appeal Stormzy displayed over its 16 tracks.<\/p>\n British Video Of The Year<\/p>\n Nominees:\u00a0*another deep breath*\u00a0Anne-Marie – \u2018Ciao Adios\u2019, Calvin Harris – \u2018Feels\u2019, Clean Bandit – \u2018Symphony\u2019, Dua Lipa – \u2018New Rules\u2019, Ed Sheeran – \u2018Shape Of You\u2019, Harry Styles – \u2018Sign Of The Times\u2019, Jonas Blue – \u2018Mama\u2019, Liam Payne – \u2018Strip That Down\u2019, Little Mix – \u2018Touch\u2019, Zayn – \u2018I Don\u2019t Wanna Live Forever\u2019<\/p>\n Who will win?\u00a0First\u00a0of all, we should point out that this category was based on which videos<\/a> had the most views on Vevo, which explains why some pretty terrible efforts from Little Mix and Harry Styles have made the cut.<\/p>\n The result is also determined by a fan vote on Twitter, and given how famously enthusiastic (translated: relentless and exhausting) those One Direction fans can be, we think \u2018Sign Of The Times\u2019 could wind up giving young Harold his first ever solo Brit. Let\u2019s just hope he\u2019s not stuck in the lav this time\u2026<\/p>\n Who should win?\u00a0Stormzy\u2019s \u2018Big For Your Boots\u2019, obviously.
