Jacob Rees-Mogg Should Not Be Next Tory Leader, Says MP In Charge Of Contest<\/b>

The next Conservative Party leadership election will see a \u201ccast of thousands\u201d run for the job but Jacob Rees-Mogg should not be one of them, the Tory MP in charge over overseeing any contest has said.<\/p>\n

Sir Graham Brady, the influential chairman of the 1922 committee of backbench Conservative MPs, said he doubted Rees-Mogg, a grassroots favourite to succeed Theresa May, could connect with the wider country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really like Jacob,\u201d\u00a0he said when asked if Rees-Mogg was a \u201cviable candidate\u201d to become party leader. \u201cGreat guy<\/a>.\u00a0Brilliant speaker. Knows exactly what he thinks. He\u2019s very often right.\u201d<\/p>\n

But confiding in young student Conservative activists at University College London (UCL) on Thursday evening, he added: \u201cI don\u2019t think that it would work. He brings a lot of fun to politics. A lot of style.\u00a0He is very entertaining.\u00a0Cheers everybody up. And there is a real serious point as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s one thing for a lot of members of the public, or the party, to think it\u2019s great fun and admire him for never mincing his words and speaking 18th Century English.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s another thing to see that translating to being the prime minister and connecting with the whole of the country. So no I don\u2019t see it happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Graham\u2019s comments were revealed in a recording of the meeting obtained by HuffPost UK.<\/p>\n

Rees-Mogg emerged as an unlikely leadership frontrunner over the summer and was the main attraction during the Tory conference in October – with younger activists swarming to his events.<\/p>\n

As 1922 chairman, Sir Graham would be the returning officer in any leadership contest just as he was during the race to replace David Cameron.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He told the BBC\u2019s Daily Politics last week that the role meant he \u201creally couldn\u2019t express a preference\u201d for who should be the next party leader.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the students, Sir Graham rubbished the idea the party would unite behind one candidate in then next contest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have colleagues who say to me if we have another leadership election we\u2019ve got to make sure there\u2019s just one candidate. We can\u2019t,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy instinct is that if there is a leadership election in the next few years you could have cast of thousands. I don\u2019t see anyone saying \u2018so-and-so is evidently the best person, we are all going to step aside\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Graham also said May had made a mistake in promoting Gavin Williamson from Chief Whip to defence secretary last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cGavin\u2019s a capable person. I wasn\u2019t asked for advice. Had I been asked for advice, my advice would have been, \u2018he\u2019s doing a good job as Chief Whip, keep him there\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can understand why he might have wanted to move on. But I thought he was doing a good job and probably should have stayed.<\/p>\n

\"Gavin<\/p>\n

Sir Graham said it would be better if the Chief Whip was an older MP \u201cin their last government job\u201d who had \u201cno personal ambition\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking about Williamson, he added: \u201cIf you have people who are early in their careers and might seek to have a number of other positions, it\u2019s difficult resist recommending yourself for post that you quite like.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sir Graham, who was recently given his knighthood in the New Year Honours list, said May had a \u201chuge number of qualities\u201d but \u201cshe\u2019s also got some things she doesn\u2019t do quite as well\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis emerged in the general election campaign.\u00a0Before then there was this great honeymoon period where everybody said Thersa May is Mother Teresa and is most remarkable prime minster we have every had, a combination of Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill and Disraeli. I never thought that was true,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe then went through that dreadful general election campaign where everything that could possibly be done wrong, was done wrong. And in-spite of that we emerged having won 2.3 million more votes than we did two years before.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd yet suddenly Theresa May was the worst possible prime we have ever had and she was a combination of the Kray twins and Al Capone – only less effective.\u00a0Neither of these things is true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Graham also warned the young Tory activists that the party could be facing a more \u201cpalatable\u201d Labour leader in 2022 because Jeremy Corbyn was so old.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Corbyn is 68,\u00a0John McDonnel is 69,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s entirely possible, might even say likely, if this parliament runs another four years,\u00a0Jeremy Corbyn won\u2019t be leading the Labour Party.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can have a nice chat<\/a> with Angela Rayner. She is far more personable than most of the Labour leadership. I couldn\u2019t ever vote for her.\u00a0But she\u2019s,\u00a0I would say, more electable probably. She is certainly more approachable, and has less obvious baggage.\u201d<\/p>\n
