John Humphrys Condemns ‘Nasty Person’ Who Leaked His Off-Air Conversation Joking About BBC Pay Gap<\/b>
\nJohn Humphrys has hit out at the \u201cnasty person\u201d who leaked an off-air conversation he had joking about equal pay for women<\/a> at the BBC, as he insisted it did not reflect his views.<\/p>\n

Humphrys, the broadcaster\u2019s highest paid news presenter, was recorded joking with colleague Jon Sopel about the issue off-air, after China editor Carrie Gracie had resigned over it.<\/p>\n

The leaked transcript of the issue caused outrage, particularly as Humphrys was allowed to continue to broadcast when women<\/a> who work at the BBC were barred from discussing the issue after expressing a view.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome nasty person decided that the world was entitled to hear it, and that one is not entitled to have private conversations,\u201d he told The Daily Telegraph.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not something that\u2019s going to dominate my existence. As far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s over and done with.\u201d<\/p>\n

ITV News doorstepped Humphrys at his home on Friday evening and he told them that he and Sopel were \u201cwinding each other up\u201d during the conversation, which he called a \u201cjoke\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added it was a \u201cjocular exchange\u201d and called it \u201ccomplete rubbish\u201d to suggest he opposed equal pay.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in the habit, Jon and I, of winding each other up and the purpose of this jokey \u2013 emphasise jokey \u2013 exchange was a bit of mutual mickey-taking and that is all it was,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf people took a different message from it, it could only be because they didn\u2019t appreciate that it was a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

The presenter told ITV News that his remarks over the BBC pay gap were a “jocular exchange” and don’t represent his views, in his first TV interview since a recording of the comments were leaked.t.co\/x1QbjZD3yBpic.twitter.com\/gSJ3XpIEGI<\/a><\/p>\n

\nHumphrys, who earns between \u00a3600,000 and \u00a3649,999,\u00a0was speaking to Sopel, who earns between \u00a3200,000 and \u00a3249,999, off-air at around 4am before Monday\u2019s edition of the Today programme.<\/p>\n

He talked Sopel through the Gracie resignation and said: \u201cShe\u2019s actually suggested that you should lose money.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told Sopel: \u201cI\u2019ve handed over already more than you fucking<\/a> earn but I\u2019m still left with more than anybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

HUMPHRYS:\u00a0 \u201cThe first question will be how much of your salary you are prepared to hand over to Carrie Gracie to keep her and then a few comments about your other colleagues, like our Middle East Editor and the other men<\/a> who are earning too much\u2026\u201d SOPEL:\u00a0\u201cIf we are talking about the scope for the greatest redistribution I\u2019ll have to come back and say well, yes, Mr Humphrys, but\u2026 HUMPHRYS:\u00a0\u201cAnd I could save you the trouble as I could volunteer I\u2019ve handed over already more than you fucking<\/a> earn but I\u2019m still left with more than anybody else and that seems to me to be entirely just – something like that would do it?\u201d SOPEL:\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t\u2026\u201d HUMPHRYS:\u00a0 \u201cOh dear God. \nHumphrys\u2019\u00a0continued presence on air came after bosses this week demanded those who have given support to the \u2018#BBCWomen\u2019 campaign to achieve equal pay stand down from reporting the topic.<\/p>\n

That rule saw Gracie herself\u00a0made to sit silently\u00a0on Monday while Humphrys reported on her case.<\/p>\n

Labour MP Stella Creasy told HuffPost UK that it was \u201cunfair\u201d some stars have been stopped from speaking while Humphrys continued to work.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cThis shows the BBC needs to ensure equal pay rather than using editorial guidelines to try to prevent presenters talking about this issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s clear everyone has an opinion, so it is unfair to stop some speaking and not others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat some of those opinions appear rooted in the 19th century when it comes to why this matters only further underlines the importance of getting this right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woman\u2019s Hour presenter Jane Garvey, who, alongside colleague Winifred Robinson, has been banned from reporting on pay disparity, described the corporation as \u201cthe Department of Mixed Messages\u201d.<\/p>\n

Miriam O\u2019Reilly, who denied being the person who leaked the Humphrys\/Sopel exchange, told Channel 4 News Humphrys should be taken off air during gender pay discussions.<\/p>\n

Channel 4 News reported the BBC knew about the exchange for several days before it was leaked and chose not to take Humphrys off air as they deemed it a private conversation,<\/p>\n

A BBC source previously told HuffPost that management were \u201cdeeply unimpressed\u201d by the exchange.<\/p>\n

And a corporation spokesperson said on Thursday evening: \u201cThis was an ill-advised off air conversation which the presenter regrets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe BBC is committed to getting its pay structures right and, as we have said, we are conducting a comprehensive analysis of presenter pay.<\/p>\n

\u201cPwC are working with us on this to ensure an objective external assessment of how we have set pay in the past, what we need to do differently going forward, and what further action we need to take immediately.<\/p>\n
