‘Time’s Up’ Is A Unifying Movement – Can Lingua Franca’s \u00a3282 Slogan Jumpers Be A Part Of That?<\/b><\/p>\n

Wearing your political<\/a> views on a slogan top is a modern fashion staple that people love as it can make you feel included in a movement.<\/p>\n

But the price of these \u201cpolitical\u201d garments can vary wildly and this prompts questions about inclusivity, especially when the\u00a0fashion<\/a> statement costs more than a day\u2019s wages.<\/p>\n

Cult American brand\u00a0Lingua Franca<\/a>\u00a0is selling jumpers for $380 (\u00a3282), with $100 dollars from each sale going towards funding the movement<\/a> of the same name.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some people who are interested in supporting the cause may not mind forking out for a cashmere jumper.<\/p>\n

But others can just as easily opt to pay $25 (\u00a318.56 ) for an official\u00a0Time Up\u2019s T-shirt<\/a>, with 100% of the proceeds going to the organisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0#metoo<\/a>\u00a0movement saw a rise in a diverse range of voices standing in solidarity against\u00a0sexual harassment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Time\u2019s Up<\/a>\u00a0is the product of this new age of speaking out. It is an organisation with the goal of protecting women<\/a> (and all) from sexual mistreatment through fierce legal defence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The organisation\u2019s website defines it as a \u201cunified call<\/a> for change\u201d spearheaded by \u201cwomen<\/a> in entertainment for women<\/a> everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom movie sets to farm fields to boardrooms alike,\u201d\u00a0reads the manifesto. \u201cWe envision nationwide leadership that reflects the world in which we live<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Times<\/p>\n

Lingua Franca also has the intention of unifying people through a common cause, but the asking price makes it very \u201cexclusive\u201d.<\/p>\n

The brand\u2019s presence grew in popularity after\u00a0Meryl Streep<\/a>\u00a0was spotted wearing one of the jumpers on The Ellen Show.<\/p>\n

Some fans commented on the jumpers\u2019 price tag, implying that supporting this movement through fashion is reserved for one group of people over another.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They took to the comments section of Instagram<\/a> to share their thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish you would make these in the sweatshirts, so they could be accessible to more women<\/a>,\u201d one commented. \u201cFor this cause, more women<\/a> wearing these would be great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love this and the message is personal,\u201d said another follower of the brand. \u201cI wish there was an option that is priced for the average consumer who wants to participate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another hoped a cheaper alternative might be available: \u201c$300 for me is just not realistic #willworkforsweater<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachelle Hruska MacPherson, founder of Lingua Franca, told HuffPost UK the brand never \u201cset out to make mass products for low- or mid-level pricing (fast fashion)\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just not us,\u201d she said. \u201cInstead, we stitch everything by hand on luxury fair trade cashmere (ethically sourced and produced using clean energy) and care deeply about paying all of our employees and our embroiderers (who all work locally in NYC) a living wage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also care about utilising our brand as a platform to create dialogue and inspire change – in our efforts to give back in tangible ways, we raised over $160,000 for charity in 2017 (with money going to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU and the Southern Poverty Law Center, to name a few).\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time a successful up-market brand has used an existing political view, in their collection.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dior<\/a>\u2019s Maria Grazia Chiuri is known for printing well-known feminist phrases onto the high-priced designs strutted down the runway at Fashion Weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0 book title \u2018We Should All Be Feminists\u2019 was splayed on a simple white shirt during Chiuri\u2019s genesis collection in 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Debrief\u00a0<\/a>called this move \u201cignorant at best, damaging at worst,\u201d and added that instead of viewing it as progression, it was seen as \u201cbig business co-opting a phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could Lingua Franca\u2019s bid to be part of the conversation be viewed in a similar vain?<\/p>\n

To MacPherson, the cost is justified by the intention and the work that is put into every garment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking in support of and in collaboration with activists and service oriented organisations, we\u2019ve created and sold pieces with meaningful phrases stitched on them,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDonating the bulk of proceeds (with the rest covering our operating expenses) to groups helping to make the world a more equitable and just place.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimply selling tons of sweaters has never been central to our mission or our goals.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The meaning of \u2018lingua franca\u2019 is \u201ca language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Times Up movement does this in spades. But the question remains as to whether an expensive range of clothing can be said to do the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n
