‘I’d Never Felt So Unprepared’: How Alison Hammond Created 2017\u2019s Most Viral Moment Completely By Accident<\/b>

It\u2019s hard to believe this was\u00a0Alison Hammond\u2019s immediate thought after filming what went on to become one of the most viral moments of 2017.<\/p>\n

The former \u2018Big Brother\u2019 star became an internet sensation when she sat down with Hollywood superstars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford to chat<\/a> about their film \u2018Blade Runner 2049\u2019 on \u2018This Morning\u2019\u00a0last October.<\/p>\n

Rather than it being the usual run-of-the-mill interview, Alison had the pair – including the notoriously difficult Harrison – in hysterics with her unusual and infectious interview style, but she tells HuffPost UK she didn\u2019t consider the chat<\/a> to be among her best work when she left the junket room set-up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t ready because I hadn\u2019t even seen [the first] \u2018Blade Runner\u2019, and when I went to see the preview of the new film, they only showed us the first 10 minutes,\u201d she says. \u201cI felt so unprepared – I\u2019d never felt so unprepared in my life to be honest with you.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I had people going, \u2018You do realise Harrison Ford doesn\u2019t like doing interviews, don\u2019t you?\u2019, so I thought, \u2018Oh great, this is going to be the worst interview ever\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went in, did the interview, and still after, I thought, \u2018Was that any good? Have we got anything? I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve got any content about the film whatsoever.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI can remember my producer say, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, we can do something with that, it\u2019ll be fine\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next thing Alison knew, the interview had clocked up millions of views on YouTube and she had calls<\/a> coming in from Australia and American media requesting interviews with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven James Corden sent me a direct message saying, \u2018Why haven\u2019t you got your own show?\u2019,\u201d she says in disbelief.<\/p>\n

While its success clearly took her by complete surprise, she reckons her lack of preparation actually proved to be the key in getting the pair on side.<\/p>\n

\u2033[Ryan] asked the question, \u2018Are you a big fan of the film?\u2019, and I was like, \u2018Well, no I\u2019m not! Do I tell him the truth? Do I lie? What do I do?\u2019\u201d she explains. \u201cBut I thought, you know what, my mum always says, always tell the truth, so I said, \u2018I\u2019ve never seen it, babes\u2019, and I think that got things going.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe started laughing and I started laughing, and it settled the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we went into the interview, and the rest is history really. It just went off-piste. I don\u2019t think I used any questions I had for the interview!\u201d<\/p>\n

Alison – who has interviewed some of the biggest names on the planet including Will Smith, Britney Spears, George Clooney and Hugh Jackman –\u00a0continued: \u201cI\u2019ve been doing \u2018This Morning\u2019 for 16 years and I\u2019ve had some brilliant\u00a0[interviews] – ones with really good content, really interesting and where I\u2019ve done my background – and they haven\u2019t gone viral!\u00a0The one interview where I wasn\u2019t prepared!<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even think I looked my best,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI was chilled out, had my hair like this, and it goes viral!<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s just one of those moments that will never be able to be recreated ever again.\u201d<\/p>\n

But just weeks later,\u00a0the Birmingham-born star (almost) equalled her efforts when she was sent to cover Prince Harry and Meghan Markle\u2019s first public engagement for \u2018This Morning\u2019.<\/p>\n

Alison was seen frantically running up and down the streets of Nottingham trying to catch a glimpse of the newly-engaged couple<\/a>, as if she was on an episode of \u2018Challenge Anneka\u2019.<\/p>\n

Throwing caution to the wind when it came to any sort of royal protocol, she screamed for \u201cMegs!\u201d and offered Harry a cuddle, before he duly dodged her in a moment that also went viral.<\/p>\n

But looking back on the encounter, Alison believes the prince was actually keener to chat<\/a> to her than he made out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe totally swerved me! But there was a moment before where he looked at me, acknowledged who I was and was going to come over for a chat<\/a>,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen he saw my microphone and that\u2019s when the swerve came into play. He didn\u2019t want to do any journalists, any TV or radio, as it was a walkabout. So if I didn\u2019t have a camera<\/a> or a microphone, I think he would have been happy to come and say \u2018Hi!\u2019. He was coming in for that hug,\u201d she roars.<\/p>\n

While ITV bosses should be thinking about ditching the usual line-up of stiff news presenters to send her down to cover the royal wedding in May, it seems she might be too busy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019ve got an invitation!\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n

Contemplating becoming a 21st century Jennie Bond,\u00a0Alison continued:\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019m going to go down the whole royal journalist route. I should maybe, shouldn\u2019t I?<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t know the protocol,\u201d she reasoned. \u201cI called her Megs and I don\u2019t think I even called him Prince Harry. I should have said Prince but I forgot. He\u2019s just Harry to me!\u201d<\/p>\n

With a royal encounter now added to the roster of megastar interviews she\u2019s conducted, you wouldn\u2019t think there would be many people Alison had left to tick off her list.<\/p>\n

But after her empowering and inspiring speech as the Golden Globes on Sunday, it seems Alison is as desperate to speak to Oprah Winfrey as the rest of us are.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to interview her,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cA couple<\/a> of years ago, I did have an interview with her when she was promoting one of her films, and it fell through – I don\u2019t know what the reasons were. The next day, I watched Lorraine Kelly interview her and I was absolutely devastated. It was a brilliant interview and Lorraine was wonderful, and I cried watching it because I love Oprah Winfrey – I think she\u2019s an inspirational woman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just devastated I didn\u2019t have that opportunity to speak to her because I had so many questions that I would have wanted to have asked.\u201d<\/p>\n
