Bafta<\/a> chairperson Jane Lush has answered criticism over the fact the organisation\u2019s 2018 film awards shortlist include an all-male<\/a> set of Best Director nominees. <\/span><\/p>\n

Film fans and critics raised eyebrows when the nominees were revealed earlier this week, especially as they came just 48 hours after Natalie Portman\u2019s on-stage comment<\/a> about the Golden Globes<\/a> shortlist also being made up entirely of men<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

With many critics suggesting \u2018Lady Bird\u2019 director Greta Gerwig deserved a nod, Jane has now responded. <\/span><\/p>\n

She told Variety: \u201cOf course we want to see women in the best director category. It is a reflection of the industry to a certain extent and we should be doing something about it, and that\u2019s why we have Bafta Elevate.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about blaming people. It\u2019s about what can we do to make it different.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Bafta Elevate is a scheme \u201cdesigned to elevate individuals from under-represented groups to the next stage of their career\u201d.<\/p>\n

Variety also reported just 16% of the entrants in the director category were women<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw was one of many left dissapointed by Bafta, writing: \u201cIt is fantastically depressing that Gerwig did not get a director nomination for her tremendous coming-of-age comedy.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Writing in a HuffPost UK blog earlier this week, Kate Kinninmont – the CEO of Women in Film and Television (UK) – asked the question of why there are \u201cso few women calling the shots behind the camera\u201d<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn truth, it\u2019s difficult to blame the Awards juries [or] voters,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThere aren\u2019t a whole ton of women<\/a> to choose from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Lady Bird\u2019 could still triumph on the night though, as Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalfe are nominated for Leading Actress and Supporting Actress, respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n

The script has also earned Greta a nod in the Best Screenplay category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
