Kay Burley’s Clash With NUS President Over Toby Young Ends With Serious Shade Thrown<\/b>
\nThe President of the National Union of Students and Kay Burley of Sky News have clashed over Toby Young quitting the new universities regulator, with the interview ending acrimoniously as the new watchdog was labelled \u201cnot fit for purpose\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shakira Martin appeared on the broadcaster after the journalist-turned-free schools advocate\u00a0apologised for sexist and other offensive tweets and writings that had caused outrage\u00a0as he stepped down from the Office for Students (OfS) board.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old has been championed as a replacement for Young, and had unsuccessfully applied for a position originally.<\/p>\n

Martin argued on Sky that despite Young\u2019s departure, the board has been \u201ctarnished\u201d and its composition does not represent students.<\/p>\n

But the interview became awkward when Burley put forward the argument made by Young\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n

Martin:\u00a0\u201cWe need a board that is working in the interests of students with the skills and expertise required to be able to tackle things like student poverty and the black attainment gap.\u201d Burley: \u201cShouldn\u2019t he be judged on his actions rather than silly schoolboy gags on Twitter?\u201d
\nThe journalist added that \u201cpeople change\u201d and that Young was \u201cpassionate about schools\u201d.<\/p>\n

Martin, though, was more anxious to talk about whether the regulator was \u201cfit for purpose\u201d, questioning the diversity of the board and whether it had the \u201cskills and expertise … to work in the interests of students\u201d.<\/p>\n

Burley suggested this was a \u201cwider point\u201d and had \u201cnothing to do with Toby Young and his interests in a better education for our children\u201d.<\/p>\n

When Martin again tried to make an argument about debt being the biggest concern for students, Burley closed down the monologue, saying: \u201cYou have made your point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burley went on to suggest Young had done his bit to help people get out of poverty and lead a \u201cbetter life\u201d by setting up several free schools that were an improvement on what existed where he lived and elsewhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am just shocked that the story is about Toby Young resigning,\u201d responded Martin, clearly frustrated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we booked you to come on, to talk about Toby Young. You said yes,\u201d came Burley\u2019s response.<\/p>\n

As the interview wound up, Martin\u2019s unguarded reaction spoke volumes (see video<\/a> at top of story).<\/p>\n

She later tweeted how her reaction reflected her unhappiness about repeatedly \u201ctalking about Toby Young being sorry\u201d.
