Men Enjoy 5 Hours More Leisure Time Than Women Each Week – Here’s Why<\/b><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a woman<\/a> who feels exhausted by the end of the day, it could be down to the amount of unpaid work you\u2019re completing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New statistics from ONS Digital<\/a> reveal men<\/a> in the UK enjoy nearly five hours extra leisure time per week compared to women.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2015, the average man<\/a> took 43 hours of leisure time per week, whereas the average woman<\/a> took around 38 hours.<\/p>\n

While men<\/a> are busy enjoying themselves, the data suggests women<\/a> are losing those five hours because we\u2019re picking up the brunt of \u201cunpaid work\u201d, such as household chores and childcare.<\/p>\n

The survey revealed both men<\/a> and women<\/a> are experiencing less leisure time than they were when a similar survey was conducted in 2000, but the gulf between the two genders is getting wider.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The survey looked at how men<\/a> and women<\/a>\u2019s time is divided in four categories: work, unpaid work, leisure and other.<\/p>\n

For the purposes of the survey, ONS defined \u201cunpaid work\u201d as \u201canything households perform for themselves or other households as opposed to pay market services for\u201d.\u00a0This could include childcare, adult care for another relative, volunteering, cooking, cleaning, DIY, gardening, transporting themselves or others, or ironing and washing clothes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Activities listed as \u201cother\u201d in the table below include sleep, personal care or unclassified activity.<\/p>\n

The latest survey does not include an exact breakdown of activities revealing what \u201cunpaid work\u201d women<\/a> are completing.<\/p>\n

But a previous ONS survey<\/a> suggests childcare may be a major culprit, with statistics indicating a much higher proportion of women<\/a> with dependent children work part-time, whereas a lower proportion of men<\/a> with dependent children do the same<\/p>\n

Siobhan Freegard, founder of parenting websites ChannelMum.com<\/a> and Netmums<\/a>, said there are three key reasons behind the fact women<\/a> are still spending more time on childcare than men<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirstly, despite the move towards shared parental leave, women<\/a> do the majority of the childcare in the early years. However this shouldn\u2019t necessarily be judged negatively,\u201d she told HuffPost UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn many cases mum maybe breastfeeding or simply prioritises her baby over work or leisure time, and that choice should be respected.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecondly, the lack of suitable, flexible full-time work means more mums than dads go part time at work, with the bulk of the childcare then falling to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd thirdly, women<\/a> still bear both the mental and physical load on chores at home, from baby jobs to school admin. Some studies even suggest mums spend up to three hours a day just on child-related admin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freegard said she\u2019s heard \u201cmany conflicting arguments\u201d as to why<\/em>\u00a0women<\/a> pick up the most jobs around childcare, from \u201cwomen<\/a> being more capable at multitasking than men<\/a>\u201d to \u201cmen<\/a> not being socialised to do it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact it is still continuing means a woman<\/a>\u2019s work is never done, even in 2018,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The gloomy reality is if women<\/a> worked out how much money they could earn by being paid for tasks currently classed as \u201cunpaid work\u201d, we\u2019d all be a lot better off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The below tool created by ONS allows you to estimate how much you could be paid for doing these tasks (if you could only find someone to pay you), based on data on 2017 earnings.<\/p>\n

As well as completing practical household tasks such as the washing, women<\/a> are stereotypically the ones responsible for jobs such as remembering family birthdays.<\/p>\n

Sociologists have long noted women<\/a> often also designate ourselves as the person to \u201ckeep the peace\u201d and ensure happiness within a family – something that\u2019s referred to as \u201cemotional labour\u201d or \u201cemotional load\u201d – meaning we feel unjust guilt when we \u201cnag\u201d a partner to do their fair share of chores.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr Lisa Huebner, a sociologist of gender at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, has previously spoken about the topic and how it takes up women<\/a>\u2019s time and energy.\u00a0She said emotional load stems from the stereotypical ways we\u2019re taught to see men<\/a> and women<\/a>\u2019s roles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn general, we gender emotions in our society by continuing to reinforce the false idea that women<\/a> are always, naturally and biologically able to feel, express, and manage our emotions better than men,\u201d she told Harpers Bazaar.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not to say that some individuals do not manage emotion better than others as part of their own individual personality, but I would argue that we still have no firm evidence that this ability is biologically determined by sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time (and I would argue because it is not a natural difference) we find all kinds of ways in society to ensure that girls<\/a> and women<\/a> are responsible for emotions and, then, men<\/a> get a pass.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The good news is Rachael Lloyd, relationship expert at eharmony<\/a>, believes it is possible to redress the balance within your relationship is you\u2019re finding unequal leisure time \u201cdemoralising\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said the best way to \u201cavoid resentment building up is to have a tactful conversation\u201d on the topic.<\/p>\n

\u201cTry to go in calmly, even if you do feel at boiling point,\u201d she told HuffPost UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cExplain that because of your daily commitments it would be great if they could pitch in more a bit more on things that benefit you both as a couple<\/a>. Give specific examples.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake sure you hear them out. There could be some unforeseen factors that have been holding them back, such as a lack of confidence in planning days out or perhaps cooking the evening meal.\u201d<\/p>\n
