A new study has found that gay<\/a> couples<\/a> tend to have better relationships when compared with their heterosexual counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>study<\/b><\/a>, titled \u201cSexual Identity and Relationship Quality in Australia and the United Kingdom,\u201d examined the relationship quality of bisexual<\/a>, gay<\/a>, lesbian<\/a> and heterosexual people in Australia and the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to author Professor Janeen Baxter, the quality of intimate relationships of gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> people was high, if not higher than the quality of heterosexual couples<\/a>\u2019 relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baxter said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur results provide robust evidence to combat deep-rooted and erroneous social perceptions of same-sex<\/a> relationships being conflictual, unhappy, and dysfunctional.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, relationship quality in same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> was as high as in heterosexual couples<\/a> in the United Kingdom, and higher in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRelative to heterosexual relationships, same-sex<\/a> relationships tend to have more equitable domestic work arrangements, less defined gender roles, and a greater sense of social connectedness to a community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe these findings support policies to legalise same-sex<\/a> marriage and parenting rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

UQ News<\/a> reports that Baxter and the study\u2019s co-author Dr Francisco Perales believe the findings suggest that heterosexual couples<\/a> could in fact learn something from gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> couples<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFurther knowledge of the strategies deployed by gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> couples<\/a> to maintain their relationship quality despite individual and institutional discrimination could help to develop new counseling tools,\u201d said Baxter<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the study also found that bisexual<\/a> people had greater difficulties with the quality of their relationships. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Baxter and Perales suggest this could be because bisexual<\/a> people often fail to fit neatly into either the heterosexual mainstream or the gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> community which could lead to poorer social networks and lower levels of social support.<\/span><\/p>\n
