Tony Blair Calls Brexit ‘Tory Psychodrama’ That Leaves No Time For Other Issues<\/b>
\nTony Blair has said Brexit is a \u201cTory psychodrama\u201d that leaves the country with \u201cno time to deal with the problems of inequality\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Guardian, the former prime minister, who has previously urged Britons to \u201crise up\u201d against Brexit, said it was \u201cnot the answer\u201d to the country\u2019s problems and said it had a \u201cdistractive impact\u201d that prevented politicians focussing on burning issues.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThat distraction means that this government has no time to deal with the health service. It\u2019s got no time to deal with the problems of poverty. It\u2019s got no time to deal with the problems of inequality.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got time to deal with one thing only. The whole country has been pulled into this Tory psychodrama over Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also said Jeremy Corbyn should oppose Brexit, saying it would be a \u201cgood idea\u201d for the Labour leader, who expressed eurosceptic sentiments before backing Remain in the referendum, to come out and say it is unworkable.<\/p>\n

The parliamentary battle over the EU Withdrawal Bill and the progress of talks with European leaders have intensified the debate around the form of Brexit the UK should pursue.<\/p>\n

This week, Theresa May suffered her first parliamentary defeat when Labour and Tory rebels narrowly won a vote in favour of an amendment giving MPs a meaningful vote on the final deal.<\/p>\n

On Friday, EU Commission president Donald Tusk said the 27 EU member states agreed \u201csufficient progress\u201d had been made for the talks to progress to trade and security.<\/p>\n

Blair\u2019s words come as prominent Tory backbenchers Ken Clarke and Jacob Rees Mogg argued over the transitional period that the EU is offering, in which Britain would remain in the Single Market and Customs Union for at least another two years after quitting the bloc in March 2019.<\/p>\n

Clarke, the former chancellor, told BBC\u2019s Newsnight Britain would go \u201coff a cliff edge\u201d, without such a deal, saying there was not enough time to finish negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI doubt we\u2019d get the planning permission for the lorry parks in time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rees Mogg, a Brexiteer, hit back, saying a transitional deal would make Britain an EU \u201ccolony\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe transition which the EU is offering means that we\u2019re still effectively in the European Union for the following two years,\u201d he said.
