Tom Chaplin Compares Writing A Classic Christmas Song Is ‘Like Breaking Into Fort Knox’<\/b>
\nAs the title might suggest, Keane frontman Tom Chaplin is trying something a little different with his second solo album, \u2018Twelve Tales Of Christmas\u2019.<\/p>\n

But creating a festive record capable of entering the history books isn\u2019t easy and as Tom points out,\u00a0timing the release correctly involves sitting down to write the tracks in the spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quite weird to be sat in the middle of the English countryside in my studio, in the garden, with everything fully in bloom, writing Christmas songs,\u201d he tells HuffPost UK.<\/p>\n

Of course, it goes without saying that a festive hit can also put\u00a0plenty\u00a0of money in the bank, just ask Mariah Carey, who makes an estimated\u00a0\u00a3370,000 a year from \u2018All I Want For Christmas\u2019 royalties.<\/p>\n

But creating a track that could\u00a0\u201cget into the Christmas playlists for the rest of time so it can pay my pension\u201d wasn\u2019t at the forefront of Tom\u2019s find.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s a really dangerous way of doing things,\u201d he insisted. \u201cFor the most part, I just try and write about what I know and my view of the world, and my experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf by some minor miracle, one of those songs enters the Christmas ouvre then I\u2019ll be a very, very happy man<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do know it\u2019s like breaking into Fort Knox so I\u2019m not holding out for that but it would be lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom\u2019s reasons for making the record – and his voice does ring of genuine sincerity as he says this – come from a far more genuine place.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristmas is this light in the middle of a dark, cold winter,\u201d he explains. \u201d[It\u2019s] being with your family and friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s taking a break from the manic, fast pace of life and it\u2019s one of the few opportunities where we have to put the brakes on our busy lives and take stock. All of that gave me lots of inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end, I wrote quite a few sad songs or songs that are bitter sweet rather than just kind of sunny, jolly Christmas songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favourite is a song called \u2018We Remember You This Christmas\u2019 which is really a song about how Christmas can make us think of people we\u2019ve lost along the way, but not to be completely sad and melancholy about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can come together and remember them, it doesn\u2019t have to be an entirely negative thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard not to sound cheesy when talking about festive cheer, but with the album, Tom has managed to take a series of classics and give them indie makeovers, with original tracks peppering the spaces in between.<\/p>\n

Take his favourite track from the album, a cover of \u2018Walking In The Air\u2019, which he has a new \u201creal David Lynch style, dark Americana vibe\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think in terms of the production and the sound, you\u2019ve got to be careful not to fall into being too overly sentimental, with sleigh bells and big string sections and choirs.\u201d to said. \u201cWe did use those elements but we were quite subtle about how we introduced them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The big question is, will Tom be pressing play on his own album on Christmas Day?<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest with you,\u201d he laughs. \u201cThrough writing it and recording it in such a short space of time, I have had those songs in my head and in my orbit for the last, kind of, couple<\/a> of months… I need a break from them.\u201d<\/p>\n
