Up to 400 Communities Across Nation Join National \u201cI Am Jazz\u201d Day of Readings<\/b>

Today, in up to 400 communities across the country, thousands of parents, educators and allies will stand in solidarity with transgender and non-binary youth by hosting school and community readings<\/a> of\u00a0“<\/em>I Am Jazz,” a children\u2019s book by transgender teen<\/a> trailblazer and HRC Youth Ambassador<\/a> Jazz Jennings. The unprecedented demonstration of support for trans<\/a> and non-binary youth – from grassroots events in libraries, schools and community centers to readings on Capitol Hill – comes after a year of significant attacks on the rights of transgender people.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransgender and non-binary youth deserve to know that their communities, neighbors and educators see them, love them and affirm them,\u201d said Mary Beth Maxwell, HRC\u2019s Senior Vice President for Research, Programs and Training. <\/strong>\u201cThese grassroots readings demonstrate the breadth and depth of support for trans<\/a> and non-binary students that exists in big cities and small towns throughout the nation. What started as a simple act of inclusion by a parent in Mt. Horeb, Wisc., in 2015 has transformed into an annual nationwide day of action and underscores the power of even one voice to spark a movement and effect positive change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to join more than 200 communities across the nation as we stand with transgender and non-binary youth in National “I Am Jazz” Day of Readings,\u201d said NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garc\u00eda. \u201cNow more than ever\u2014what with the fear, humiliation, and discriminatory policies coming from the Trump administration\u2014we take this opportunity for educators, schools and communities to send a powerful message of love, support and affirmation for transgender and non-binary students. As this administration threatens our students and our values, we will double-down on our efforts to protect our most vulnerable citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

The national day of readings was inspired by the more than 600 residents of tiny Mount Horeb, Wisc., who in 2015 unequivocally supported a young transgender student and her family and rebuked bigotry and censorship by showing up for a public reading of the book. The reading was organized by a caring local parent after legal threats by an outside anti-LGBTQ hate group<\/a> forced the transgender student\u2019s school to cancel plans to support her by reading the book in class.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Over the last year, the transgender community has come under attack from anti-equality activists and politicians. In one of their first major acts, the Trump-Pence Administration\u2019s Departments of Justice and Education rescinded lifesaving guidance promoting the protection of transgender students. This past summer, the President announced he would\u00a0 reinstate a ban on qualified transgender people serving openly in the military. Meanwhile, over the past three years, more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced in roughly 38 states around the nation, many targeting transgender youth and, increasingly, anti-LGBTQ groups are also targeting schools and local districts seeking to welcome all students with inclusive policies and practices.<\/p>\n

The nationwide act of solidarity is sponsored by the HRC Foundation\u2019s Welcoming Schools<\/a> program and the NEA. It unites in action youth, educators, and allies who are hosting readings of<\/a>\u00a0“<\/em>I Am Jazz”<\/a>\u00a0in hundreds of schools, churches, bookstores, homes, and community centers in states across the country.<\/p>\n

HRC Foundation\u2019s Welcoming Schools<\/a> is the nation\u2019s premier professional development program providing training to elementary school educators to welcome diverse families, create LGBTQ and gender-inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying, and support transgender and gender expansive students. HRC\u2019s Welcoming Schools has created this guide<\/a> to help organizers of “I Am Jazz” <\/em>reading events build more affirming and supportive spaces for transgender and non-binary youth.<\/p>\n
