‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Pro Alja\u017e \u0160korjanec Backs Calls For Same-Sex Couples<\/b>
\n\u2018Strictly Come Dancing\u2019 professional Alja\u017e \u0160korjanec has backed calls<\/a> for same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> to be introduced on the show.<\/p>\n

The dancer has said he would be open to dancing with a male<\/a> celebrity and hopes to still be on the show if and when the changes are made.<\/p>\n

The BBC has been under increasing pressure to allow same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> to compete, with a number of the \u2018Strictly\u2019 team also speaking out about the matter.<\/p>\n

Alja\u017e is the latest star to do so, telling HuffPost UK: \u201cI\u2019ve never actually spoken about it that much, but I\u2019m always going to come in and do the best job I can. It doesn\u2019t matter who it is or what sex<\/a> they are.<\/p>\n

He continued: \u2033\u2018Strictly\u2019 has been so successful because it has been the same for the last 14 years and the formula hasn\u2019t changed, so we all trust the producers 100%.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of the few shows on television that is done with a positive thought behind it. If they do decide to go down that road, it will be with the most positive intention, so we will follow their lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we will be there when it does happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alja\u017e\u2019s current partner, former \u2018Emmerdale\u2019 star Gemma Atkinson, also added her voice to the debate, but her opinion slightly differed.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI\u2019m not a pro dancer, but for \u2018Strictly\u2019 to get any better, I don\u2019t think that needs to happen – people know it\u2019s 2017 and know people are in same-sex<\/a> marriages and partnerships.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think putting two people on the dancefloor of the same sex<\/a> will wake people up any more. If it does, then there\u2019s a problem. We should be open to that anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year \u2018Strictly\u2019 bosses issued a statement claiming there were \u201cno plans\u201d to deviate from the \u201ctraditional format of mixed-sex<\/a> couples<\/a>\u201d in the immediate future.<\/p>\n

It has been a topic of conversation among the stars of the show, with fellow professional Anton Du Beke previously shared his concerns about how having same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> would affect the scoring, but judge Craig Revel Horwood has called for them to be introduced.<\/p>\n

During the interview, Gemma also addressed press coverage about her personal life, amid rumours of a romance with professional dancer Gorka Marquez.<\/p>\n

While no mention of any relationship was made, she admitted she has been avoiding reading about herself in the papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t find [media attention] distracting because, without sounding horrible, we don\u2019t pay attention. Everyone in this group knows what\u2019s going on and we know we have a job to do. Anything outside of that and our control,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe said from day one, every time we do a dance, some people will love it, some people will hate it. Every interview, some people will get it, others won\u2019t. We have to have our blinkers on to everything except the dance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alja\u017e added: \u201cIf you are in the competition and you are rehearsing as much as you can, the last thing you have time to do is read about it. If you have time for it, you\u2019re not rehearsing enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Strictly Come Dancing\u2019 continues on Saturday at 6.50pm on BBC One.
