Toothpaste Ad Featuring ‘Naked’ Model Banned For ‘Objectifying Women’<\/b>
\nA toothpaste ad has been banned for its inclusion of a naked<\/a> woman<\/a> after members of the public complained that it\u00a0\u201cobjectified women<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The ad, for BOCA organic toothpaste, appeared in a supplement magazine that came with The Times newspaper in July and featured a woman<\/a> who appeared to be wearing only a pair of heels.<\/p>\n

In response to complaints, BOCA denied that the woman<\/a> in the ad was naked<\/a>, stating there is a fine line \u201cbetween sexual objectification and the expression of sensuality\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned the ad from appearing again in its current form, ruling it \u201cobjectified women<\/a>\u201d and stating it was \u201clikely to cause serious or widespread offence\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ASA received two complaints about the ad, which appeared in The Time\u2019s Raconteur supplement on July 28 2017.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson from Croftscope Ltd, which owns BOCA, told ASA they belived the ad reflected the \u201csensual and organic nature of their product\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBOCA also stated their target audience was predominantly female<\/a>, with an aspirational lifestyle characterised by luxury and self-indulgence,\u201d the ASA ruling states.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey also stated that their products uniquely featured day and overnight formulations, and the latter promoted relaxation prior to retiring. They said the image demonstrated the model in a relaxed pose that was commensurate with the product.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson from Raconteur Media Ltd, who oversee the supplement mag, also stated they \u201cdid not believe that the image of the woman<\/a> in the ad was overtly sexual\u201d as she was \u201cmostly obscured by the chair in the image, with only one leg being visible\u201d. They added they did not believe that the image objectified women<\/a> as the ad was \u201cdemure in its setting\u201d.<\/p>\n

Despite these protestations, ASA still ruled the ad was \u201csexually provocative\u201d, stating although the model\u2019s upper torso (including her nipples) were out of shot, the implication was that she was nude<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, because the model\u2019s face was not shown, we considered that the visible parts of her torso, including her lower portion of her breasts, and the lower half of her body became the visual emphasis of the ad, which was likely to draw readers\u2019 attention,\u201d the ruling said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also considered that the nudity and the pose of the model, and the provocative nature of the ad, bore no relevance to the product.\u201d
