A new book,\u00a0Mostly Straight: Sexual Fluidity Among Men<\/a><\/em>, <\/i>says there\u2019s a fourth category of male<\/a> sexuality in addition to gay<\/a>, straight, and bisexual<\/a> which has been made possible by millennials with a more relaxed view of sexual orientation.<\/p>\n A growing number of men<\/a> (6% according to a poll cited by author Ritch C. Savin Williams) are identifying as \u201cmostly straight,\u201d a category \u201cnot readily available to previous generations.\u201d<\/p>\n Writes Williams in his book:<\/a><\/p>\n The mostly straight man<\/a> belongs to a growing trend of young men<\/a> who are secure in their heterosexuality yet remain aware of their potential to experience far more. Perhaps he\u2019s felt attracted to or fantasized about another guy<\/a> to a slight degree or intermittently. He might or might not be comfortable with this seeming contradiction, a hetero guy<\/a> who, despite his lust for women<\/a>, rejects a straight label, a sexual category and a sexual description that feels foreign. He\u2019d rather find another place on the sexual\/romantic continuum, some location that fits him more comfortably.<\/p>\n He knows he\u2019s not gay<\/a>, but straight with a dash of gayness. But how much gayness? Not much \u2014 a relatively small percentage, say around 5% to 10%, of his sexual and romantic feelings. Strict rules don\u2019t apply. These attractions are sexual, romantic or both and can be expressed in various ways, from erotic fantasies to actual behavior. Perhaps he\u2019s made out or he wants to make out with a guy<\/a> friend. He\u2019s participated in all-male<\/a> group masturbation or is willing to receive oral sex<\/a> from an attractive guy<\/a> he\u2019s just met. But it\u2019s unlikely that he has had penetrative sex<\/a> with a guy<\/a>, though he might be willing to if the right guy<\/a> or circumstance appeared. He might have had an intense guy<\/a> crush. But to fall passionately in love with a guy<\/a> is too much, though he might have quite strong feelings and cuddle with a best friend.<\/p>\n This man<\/a>, according to Williams, is not a bisexual<\/a> in disguise or hoping he\u2019ll turn out as fully straight one day. He also says the \u201cmostly straight\u201d man<\/a> is not afraid to identify as bisexual<\/a> for fear of social stigma, and in another part argues that \u201cbisexual<\/a>, even if it is understood as \u2018bisexual<\/a>-leaning straight,\u2019 is too gay<\/a> to accurately describe their identity.\u201d<\/p>\n Adds Williams:<\/p>\n He is not a disgruntled straight man<\/a> tired of sex<\/a> with women<\/a>, nor is he necessarily unhappy or frustrated with the availability of heterosexual sex<\/a>. He may retreat from a full identification with heterosexuality, but rarely does he gravitate toward bisexuality, and almost never does he move toward homosexuality of any sort.
