<\/p>\nNEW MUSIC: Morrissey \u2013 \u2018Low In High School\u2019<\/b>

Morrissey \u2013 <\/b>Low In High School<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n It\u2019s hard work being a Morrissey<\/strong><\/a> fan. From the early heady days of his solo career when the first tour was worthy of an MTV special to the genius first few albums (apart from <\/span>Kill Uncle<\/span><\/i> obviously), right up to 2004\u2019s \u201ccomeback\u201d of sorts <\/span>You Are the Quarry<\/span><\/i>, you were always assured of something close to brilliant with a hint of the ridiculous.<\/span><\/p>\n Then came the very average <\/span>Ringleader of the Tormentors<\/span><\/i>, the really bad <\/span>Years of Refusal <\/span><\/i>and the debacle of 2014\u2019s <\/span>World Peace Is None Of Your Business<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n With Stephen getting older and even grumpier, isolated as he is high in the Hollywood hills, all he has to do these days is pop up once every three or four years, say something vaguely racist, release an album on yet <\/span>another<\/span><\/i> label with whom he will soon fall out, cancel most of a world tour and head back home to ruminate from a massive distance on shitty England, corruption and\u2026.oh look, Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n Since hitting his 40s, Morrissey has gradually become more and more bitter. Call me cynical but the pop star in him saw the potential behind the media-led fake outrage over \u201cNational Front Disco\u201d all those years ago and has expertly bottled controversy to order. <\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s not easy for an old man<\/a> in the years of the Twitter cesspit but he can still make headlines. For <\/span>Low In High School<\/span><\/i> he suggested that a leadership battle for England\u2019s UKIP party (nothing vague about their racism, main force behind not at all racist Brexit) was biased against a candidate because she is \u201copenly\u201d anti-Islam. <\/span><\/p>\n Consider that to be the opening statement for <\/span>Low In High School<\/span><\/i>. Old Morrissey has often been a bit mean, sometimes seriously bitter and nasty. Take \u201cThe World Is Full of Crashing Bores\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s just more lock-jawed pop-stars<\/span><\/p>\n Thicker than pig-shit<\/span><\/p>\n Nothing to convey<\/span><\/p>\n So scared to show intelligence<\/span><\/p>\n It might smear their lovely career<\/span><\/p>\n Fair point Moz. However:<\/span><\/p>\n Lamenting policewomen, policemen<\/span><\/p>\n Silly women<\/a>, taxmen, uniformed whores<\/span><\/p>\n They who wish to hurt you<\/span><\/p>\n Work within the law<\/span><\/p>\n Aw bless, poor Morrissey has to pay taxes and abide by the law. <\/span><\/p>\n And so to \u201cI Bury the Living\u201d on which he claims that all soldiers too are thick as pig-shit and driven by \u201cthe hatred of all human life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n You can\u2019t blame me<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019m just an innocent soldier<\/span><\/p>\n There would be no war<\/span><\/p>\n If not for me<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019m just a sweet little soldier<\/span><\/p>\n No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no<\/span><\/p>\n You can\u2019t blame me<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019m just an innocent soldier<\/span><\/p>\n Give me an order!<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019ll blow up a border<\/span><\/p>\n And I\u2019ll blow up your daughter<\/span><\/p>\n Oh sweet Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n It gets worse on the closing track \u201cIsrael\u201d on which you have to think: Hold on, is he just taking the piss? Possibly. I love the <\/span>Cranberries<\/b>, warts and all but not since Dolly O\u2019Cranberry lamented on \u201cSarajevo\u201d that \u201cBosnia was so unkind\u201d but not to worry because \u201cthings would change if we really wanted them to\u201d has there been such a crass take on such an important issue. At least Dolores meant well. Not Morrissey:<\/span><\/p>\n And they who reign abuse upon you<\/span><\/p>\n They are jealous of you as well<\/span><\/p>\n Love yourself as you should<\/span><\/p>\n That\u2019s it. Hamas is jealous of Israel. Jealous! If only someone had had a word with the IRA a few decades earlier, Ireland would be a different country.<\/span><\/p>\n With their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns indeed.<\/p>\n Despite all this, as Morrissey does, there are some genuinely brilliant songs on Low In High School<\/em>. The lead track \u201cSpent the Day In Bed\u201d is not one of them. If you can get over or ignore the lyrics, \u201cI Bury the Living\u201d is classic Morrissey stomping genius.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAll the Young People Must Fall In Love\u201d is quite genuinely one of the best Moz songs in years. It\u2019s playful, sweet and quietly scathing:<\/span><\/p>\n They say presidents come, presidents go<\/span><\/p>\n But all the young people they must fall in love<\/span><\/p>\n All the young people they must fall in love<\/span><\/p>\n Presidents come, presidents go<\/span><\/p>\n And oh look at the damage they do<\/span><\/p>\n On \u201cWho Will Protect Us From the Police,\u201d Moz does his Moz thing \u2013 funny, simple, relevant, biting and playing right into his audience\u2019s middle aged hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u201cLow In High School\u201d is not in any way a bad album. In fact it\u2019s very possibly his best since <\/span>You Are the Quarry<\/span><\/i>. However, the bitterness leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. He\u2019s not some thin, beautiful whipper-snapper anymore. The petty, adolescent bullshit is 30 years old. Grow up old man<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n Fans will want to get the album now before he cancels his world tour and falls out with BMG which will then delete it.
