{"id":57693,"date":"2017-11-07T18:15:26","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T23:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/birmingham-leads-economic-surge-among-midlands-and-northern-cities\/"},"modified":"2017-11-07T18:15:26","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T23:15:26","slug":"birmingham-leads-economic-surge-among-midlands-and-northern-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/birmingham-leads-economic-surge-among-midlands-and-northern-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham Leads Economic Surge Among Midlands And Northern Cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Birmingham Leads Economic Surge Among Midlands And Northern Cities<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/5a022e7017000021007965d8.jpeg\" data-caption=\"<strong>The revamped&nbsp;Birmingham New Street station.<\/strong>&#8221; alt=&#8221;<strong>The revamped&nbsp;Birmingham New Street station.<\/strong>&#8221; data-credit=&#8221;Christopher Furlong via Getty Images&#8221; data-portal-copyright=&#8221;Christopher Furlong via Getty Images&#8221; data-provider=&#8221;getty&#8221; data-provider-asset-id=&#8221;492446518&#8243; data-has-syndication-rights=&#8221;true&#8221;><\/p>\n<p>The economic divide between the south of England and the Midlands and north appears to be gradually closing as a report signalled once struggling cities were the most improved places to <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">live<\/a> and work in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis by accountant PwC and thinktank Demos ranks Birmingham as the most rapidly-improving city in the country, and places Leeds, Newcastle, Derby and Liverpool among the top ten places on the up.<\/p>\n<p>While Birmingham still ranked 32nd overall in the annual study, the report noted how the \u201csecond city\u201d improved its index score on a year ago &#8211; as did other Midlands and northern cities that have struggled to cope as their traditional industries have declined.<\/p>\n<p>The report found an improvement in jobs, income and skills among a series of much-improved measures.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Good Growth for Cities index gauged 42 UK cities on the basis of transport, work-life balance, inequality and health, as well as income levels.<\/p>\n<p>Years of regional devolution have now started to bear fruit, the report suggested, even before Birmingham and many other so-called \u2018city-regions\u2019 have been given directly-elected mayors, taking power away from Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>A major justification for building the high-speed HS2 rail line has been to boost the economies of Birmingham and other cities and towns north of London.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0Oxford and Reading remain well ahead according to the index, and cities in the north east &#8211; notably Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Stockton &#8211; remain at the bottom of the list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Birmingham\u2019s unemployment rate fell to 7.4% last year from 11.4% in 2013, and it has been buoyed by the regeneration of New Street station and the new Grand Central shopping centre among a string of investments.<\/p>\n<p>The study did point to housing becoming less affordable, fewer people owning their own property, commuter times increasing and minor declines in both the health and work-life balance indicators across the 42 cities.<\/p>\n<p>John Hawksworth, chief economist at PwC, said: \u201cThe UK has been a great job-creating machine in recent years and this has driven improvement in our good growth index this year across all major UK cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/birmingham-cities-economy_uk_5a021d07e4b04e96f0c60f4c\" class=\"autohyperlink\">www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/birmingham-cities-economy_uk_5a021d07e4b04e96f0c60f4c<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Birmingham Leads Economic Surge Among Midlands And Northern Cities<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2466,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[107],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-57693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
