Daily Mail Journalist Ann Leslie Slammed For Criticising Woman Who Report Sexual Harassment<\/b>
\nA Daily Mail journalist has faced a backlash after criticising women<\/a> for coming forward about being sexually harassed.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Channel 4 News, Dame Ann Leslie told Krishnan Guru-Murthy that women<\/a> \u201ccan\u2019t have it both ways\u201d.<\/p>\n

The long-serving foreign correspondent condemned women<\/a> who have spoke out in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein scandal as she revealed on the programme that she had been sexually assaulted by late Tory MP Nicholas Fairburn.<\/p>\n

The journalist said that the Scottish politician, who died in 1995, put his hand on her crotch when they were both appearing on an episode of BBC Radio 4\u2032s Any Questions.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cHowever, what I don\u2019t like about what\u2019s going on now is feminists have been trying all the time to say \u2018oh my goodness, women<\/a> must be in power, they must be strong, they will be strong\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey seem to spend their time now saying women<\/a> are traumatised because some some silly old drunk in Parliament put his hand on her knee or anything like that.\u00a0You can\u2019t have it both ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t say women<\/a> are strong and empowered and then say they\u2019re scared and they\u2019re going to cry and all that sort of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kat Banyard, director of feminist pressure group UK Feminista, countered: \u201cI think it shows how much courage the women<\/a> and girls<\/a> reporting sexual harassment have when on countless discussions on national TV and in the media this issue is still trivialised and dismissed, when we know actually sexual harassment is a routine, every day experience for many women<\/a> and girls<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leslie also described recent revelations about sexual harassment which have been emerging from numerous industries, as well as from inside Parliament, as \u201cpattercake, absolutely ridiculous\u201d.<\/p>\n

Leslie also claimed that women<\/a> in the UK believe if they are touched on the arm, they \u201cshould scream and say \u2018rape coming up\u2019\u201d, to which an astonished Guru-Murthy responded: \u201cThey don\u2019t scream and say rape, they say stop treating me like a sexual object.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her comments prompted a wave of criticism on social media…<\/p>\n
