Who Is George Papadopoulos, Trump Aide Who Lied To FBI About Russian \u2018Dirt\u2019?<\/b>
\nA foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump\u2019s presidential campaign has pleaded guilty to a charge of lying to FBI agents about \u201cdirt\u201d he was offered on Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n

George Papadopoulos, 30,\u00a0pleaded guilty on October 5, but the case wasn\u2019t unsealed until Monday, according to a statement from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.<\/p>\n

He becomes the third adviser to Trump\u2019s campaign to face criminal charges in the FBI investigation after Paul Manafort,\u00a0the former Trump campaign chairman, and his associate,\u00a0Rick Gates,\u00a0surrendered on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Papadopoulos reached a plea deal with prosecutors, and has since been cooperating with Mueller\u2019s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors\u2019 statement of the offence alleges Papadopoulos was offered thousands of emails containing \u201cdirt\u201d on Clinton in April 2016 \u2015\u00a0months before the Russian hack\u00a0of the Democratic National Committee was known.<\/p>\n

\nBut he made no mention of the Papadopoulos guilty plea, which commentators have hailed as \u201csignificant\u201d.<\/p>\n

Former US Attorney Preet Bharara, who was fired by President Trump earlier this year,\u00a0tweeted:\u00a0\u201cSpecial Counsel Mueller already has one criminal conviction. And this plea portends more charges to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nRebecca Roiphe, a professor at New York Law School and a former assistant district attorney, noted the publication of Papadopoulos\u2019 plea agreement online sends a certain message.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can tell that he\u2019s a cooperator from that,\u201d she told the Daily News. \u201cMy only speculation is they\u2019re trying to get people to flip. They\u2019re saying to people, publicly, We have more information than you think you have.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the statement, Papadopoulos\u00a0\u201cmade material false statements and material omissions\u201d during a January 27 interview with the FBI and was arrested on July 27.<\/p>\n

Under a plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to recommend between no prison time to six months.<\/p>\n

Who is George Papadopoulos?<\/p>\n

Papadopolous is an international energy lawyer who was on Trump\u2019s advisory team during the 2016 presidential campaign.<\/p>\n

The Washington Post reported\u00a0that Papadopoulos is a 2009 graduate of DePaul University in Chicago, before moving to London to get a master\u2019s degree in security studies.<\/p>\n

Previously, he was an adviser to Ben Carson\u2019s presidential campaign and was the US representative at the Geneva International Model United Nations in 2012.<\/p>\n

The newspaper notes, however, that Papadopoulos \u201chas not left much of a paper trail\u201d, pointing to handful of newspaper op-eds and articles with Israeli news outlets.<\/p>\n

All his commentary argues Israel should use the natural gas it has found in the giant Leviathan field offshore in the eastern Mediterranean to build bridges to Greece and Cyprus, and avoid dealing with Turkey at all costs.<\/p>\n

Who is the London connection?<\/p>\n

Papadopoulos was living in London when he joined the Trump campaign, according to the statement.<\/p>\n

Papadopoulos told the FBI a London-based professor had \u201ctold him about the Russians possessing \u2018dirt\u2019 on then-candidate Hillary Clinton in the form of \u2018thousands of emails,\u2019 but stated multiple times that he learned that information prior to joining the campaign\u201d, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

In fact, Papadopoulos was contacted after he learned he\u2019d be joining the campaign, and the professor only mentioned the \u201cthousands of emails\u201d after he\u2019d been on the Trump campaign for more than a month.<\/p>\n

The professor, the statement indicates, had \u201csubstantial connections to Russian government officials\u201d even though Papadopoulos claimed the professor was \u201ca nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Papadopoulos sent a \u201cHigh-Ranking Campaign Official\u201d an email titled \u201cNew message from Russia\u201d back in June 2016, in which he said the Russian ministry of foreign affairs wanted to meet with either Trump or a campaign official in an off-the-record capacity, according to the prosecutors\u2019 statement.<\/p>\n

A Trump campaign supervisor encouraged Papadopoulos to make the trip \u201cif it is feasible\u201d on August 15, 2016.<\/p>\n
