Wetherspoons Gets Withering Sunday Times Review And It’s Made People Furious<\/b>
\nIt\u2019s arguably Britain\u2019s favourite pub chain. But a newly-opened branch of Wetherspoons has prompted\u00a0a brutal review by a Sunday Times restaurant critic\u00a0that has opened up a fierce debate about food snobbery and class.<\/p>\n

Food writer Marina O\u2019Loughlin admitted she used the pub behemoth as a\u00a0 \u201cshorthand for all that\u2019s bad about \u2018British\u2019 food and chain catering\u201d despite never having eaten at one. So, in tandem with a self-confessed \u2019Spoons fan,\u00a0 she visited its new Ramsgate outpost in Kent – a decaying Victorian building turned into a \u201cbasic nirvana\u201d – to test her prejudice.<\/p>\n

The vibe? \u201cAll the vomitous carpets, hastily erected wood panelling, fruit machines and reproduction art a cheap beer devotee could desire,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0O\u2019Loughlin writes of her first impression.<\/p>\n

While the Purple Rain cocktails tasted of \u201cCalpol and diabetic coma\u201d, the wait was forecast to be 40 minutes and the clientele likely to be dominated by \u201cfamilies and sad old men<\/a>\u201d, it was the food that triggered the most despair.<\/p>\n

The calorific menu was \u201cinstitutionalised lunacy\u201d when \u201cTopped chips\u201d tipped the scales at 1,422 calories. \u201cIt\u2019s a Project Fear of a menu,\u201d she thinks.<\/p>\n

Ordering pepperoni pizza, the critic described how it \u201cskites off its plate\u201d after being \u201cdumped on the table\u201d. \u201cI suppose it\u2019s all the respect this oily number deserves,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n

The breadcrumbed scampi was described as \u201cstiff orange coffins emitting an ooze of vaguely fishy goo\u201d. But the worst dish was the\u00a0\u201cside\u201d (author\u2019s quotation marks of ribs (\u201cwho orders a side of ribs?\u201d): \u201cIt\u2019s the sort of thing you might scoop out of the bottom of Hannibal Lecter\u2019s recycling bin.\u201d<\/p>\n

The experience wan\u2019t all bad. \u201cThe terrace that wraps around this ravishing piece of seaside architecture is quite the place to sit with a pint, looking out to sea,\u201d she continues, though \u201conly if you smuggle out a picnic\u201d.<\/p>\n

In conclusion,\u00a0O\u2019Loughlin was \u201cno convert\u201d and unapologetic, arguing that food snobbery means \u201cthe chains and moneymen with their spreadsheets and battery chickens won\u2019t always win\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it\u2019s cheap, but, to quote my mama, I wouldn\u2019t give you tuppence for it,\u201d she writes. \u201cThis is cheap not because it\u2019s good value, but because it\u2019s nasty. At least I can now slag it off from a position of authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comments on the Times\u2019 website suggested the review had divided opinion.<\/p>\n

But the sense O\u2019Loughlin had gone a sneer too far was evident once the writer released the review on social media.

\nLoad of snobby bullshite. Tim Martin ( not a man<\/a> I agree with on many issues) has created a fantastic British institution with his chain of pubs. They offer people a familiar place to go, where notions of class are rightly left at the door and all are equal. #spoonslife is king<\/p>\n

\nI\u2019m a big fan but this was like reviewing ryanair. It\u2019s shit, we all know it, but there\u2019s a market. Was ever thus. Why waste space on it?
\nBecause it has many, many fans. Because perhaps I was wrong about it having never eaten there. Because it’s how a lot of people ‘dine out’. Because I should know these things. Because it’s the biggest pub in the UK and therefore newsworthy. Because… oh look I have 280 chrctrs!<\/p>\n

\nThe Wetherspoons to-do touches on something I hate about foodie culture: Not every meal has to be great or even good.
\nFor most people, the vast majority of meals just have to be OK. They serve a purpose of filling you up while tasting alright.
\n“Fuck it, that’ll do” is an absolutely fine approach to 95% (probably more) of meals. It doesn’t have to be a constant voyage of discovery.
\nIn my field, this also applies to hotels. Most of us don’t care about art\/ design in hotels – just want somewhere cheap\/ decent\/ central.
