NEW YORK<\/strong> \u2013 Please consider the following guidelines when covering stories about HIV and AIDS. The reality of HIV and AIDS has evolved in the United States since it was first brought to the public consciousness in the 1980s. Last week, Georgia State Representative Betty Price made the disturbing, misinformed suggestion<\/a> that people living with HIV and AIDS should be quarantined. Price\u2019s remark illustrates the miseducation and stigma that continues to surround this topic, as well as the need to get the story right about HIV and AIDS in this country.<\/p>\n

This style guide will help you avoid common mistakes and prevent the stigmatization of people who are living with, or affected by, HIV.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T<\/strong> use \u201cHIV\/AIDS.\u201d This implies that the two are the same or interchangeable, and they\u2019re not. Everyone who has AIDS has HIV, but not everyone with HIV develops AIDS.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 DO<\/strong> use \u201cHIV and AIDS\u201d or \u201cHIV or AIDS,\u201d as applicable in the context of your story.<\/p>\n

AVOID<\/strong> reducing people to their HIV status.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T<\/strong> use the term \u201cHIV positive person.\u201d
DO<\/strong> use \u201cperson living with HIV.\u201d<\/p>\n

AVOID<\/strong> using terms such as \u201cterminal illness,\u201d and \u201cfatal illness,\u201d as well as sensationalistic words such as \u201cscourge\u201d or \u201cplague.\u201d This is not accurate, due to advances in treatment. HIV and AIDS can be more accurately described as a \u201clife-threatening disease when not treated.\u201d<\/p>\n

DO <\/strong>emphasize that the life expectancy of people living with HIV and AIDS has increased significantly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DO <\/strong>report the fact that the Center for Disease Control has recently recognized that when individual\u2019s HIV viral count is undetectable, it is virtually impossible for them to transmit HIV to a sexual partner.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T <\/strong>use the term \u201chigh-risk group\u201d as it is often used to stigmatize LGBTQ populations. HIV transmission is not exclusive to any one sexual orientation. Instead, it is better to say that a person is engaging in a \u201cknown risk factor\u201d such as sex<\/a> without a condom or using unsterile needles.<\/p>\n

AVOID<\/strong> terms that directly or indirectly pit LGBTQ people against others at risk for HIV. For example, references to \u201cthe general population\u201d typically are used to suggest that LGBTQ people should be considered separate and apart from broader prevention and treatment strategies.<\/p>\n

AVOID<\/strong> the use of derogatory and stigmatizing terms such as \u201cdrug addict\u201d or \u201cdrug abuser.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 DO<\/strong> use \u201cperson who injects drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T<\/strong> use \u201cintravenous drug user,\u201d which may often not be accurate because drugs can also be injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T <\/strong>use the terms \u201cunprotected sex<\/a>\u201d or \u201cunsafe sex<\/a>.\u201d Instead be as specific as possible such as \u201cengaged in sex<\/a> without a condom.\u201d<\/p>\n

DO<\/strong> use \u201csafer sex<\/a>\u201d to describe choices that are made to reduce or minimize the possibility of HIV transmission.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T<\/strong> use \u201csafe sex<\/a>,\u201d as it implies there is zero risk.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T<\/strong> say \u201cdeath from AIDS\u201d or a person \u201cdied of AIDS,\u201d as this is inaccurate. AIDS is a syndrome, that is, a group of illnesses resulting from the weakening of a person\u2019s immune system. It is better to say a person has died of complications from having AIDS or an AIDS related illness.<\/p>\n

DO<\/strong> include voices of people living with HIV and AIDS. Hearing from people living with HIV and AIDS, not just caregivers and researchers is critically important.<\/p>\n

DO<\/strong> include information about assets and support structures that exist for those living with HIV. Access to healthcare and education about the virus makes living with HIV easier.
ALSO<\/strong> identify when communities do not have access to these assets, and why they do not have access to these assets.<\/p>\n
