Elton John Blasts Congresswoman for Suggesting People with HIV Should Be Quarantined<\/b><\/p>\n

Elton John blasted Betty Price, a GOP congresswoman from Georgia and the wife of former HHS Secretary Tom Price, after Price suggested that\u00a0 people with HIV be quarantined<\/a>.<\/p>\n

STAT reported on Price\u2019s remarks<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to say the quarantine word \u2013 but I guess I just said it,\u201d Price said to Dr. Pascale Wortley, director of the Georgia Department of Public Health\u2019s HIV epidemiology section. \u201cBut is there an ability, since I guess public dollars are expended heavily in prophylaxis and treatment of this condition, so we have a public interest in curtailing the spread\u2026 Are there any methods we could do legally to curtail the spread?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost frightening the number of people who are living that are carriers with the potential to spread,\u201d Price said during the hearing. \u201cWhereas in the past, they died more readily, and at that point, they\u2019re not posing a risk. So we\u2019ve got a huge population posing a risk if they\u2019re not in treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elton John released a statement through the Elton John AIDS Foundation:<\/p>\n

\u201cRep. Betty Price\u2019s comments about people living with HIV are horrific, discriminatory, and astonishingly ill-informed. As a doctor and elected official from a state where people are still contracting HIV at an alarming rate, Mrs. Price should know better than to demonize people and perpetuate myths that stigmatize people living with HIV.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer words smack of a dark time when there was little or no information about HIV and people were afraid of each other. Today, thanks to scientific advancements, growing acceptance and love, people living with HIV are living longer, healthier lives. We also know people living with HIV pose no public threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at the\u00a0Elton<\/span>\u00a0John<\/span>\u00a0AIDS Foundation, along with several of our partners, are aggressively working in Georgia and across the South to expand access to universal testing and treatment, particularly in rural areas. We also are working to dismantle the structural barriers including poverty, inadequate education, persistent HIV stigma, racism, homophobia and transphobia that impede progress. Instead of perpetuating fear and bias, Mrs. Price should educate herself about HIV and use her position of power to provide support, resources and compassion to her constituents. Love is the cure. Not quarantines.\u201d<\/p>\n
