CNN spotlights GLAAD’s new digital advocacy program to combat the alt-right online<\/b><\/p>\n

CNN Tech’s Laurie Segall chatted with GLAAD’s Chief Digital Officer, Jim Halloran, about\u00a0GLAAD\u2019s new work to combat anti-LGBTQ and alt-right leaders online as well as the organization\u2019s continued mission to push for safe inclusion of LGBTQ people across social media platforms.<\/p>\n

As Halloran mentioned to CNN, \u201cdigital rights are LGBTQ rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

Technology provides a lifeline for\u00a0LGBTQ\u00a0people by helping\u00a0form community, access vital resources, and see positive role models. For years, GLAAD has lead\u00a0initiatives to increase LGBTQ inclusion in digital spaces. GLAAD worked with Tinder to make the platform safe for\u00a0trans users<\/a>, with Facebook to\u00a0expand gender options in profiles<\/a>, and Symantec to allow\u00a0equal\u00a0access to LGBTQ resources<\/a>. In addition, GLAAD sits on advisory councils for both\u00a0Facebook<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Digital rights are LGBTQ rights<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But recently news outlets have reported that LGBTQ content is being inadvertently blocked<\/a> on social platforms. And, the alt-right has launched new organizing efforts across tech platforms.<\/p>\n

GLAAD has expanded\u00a0our\u00a0work\u00a0to\u00a0preserve the\u00a0digital\u00a0lifeline for LGBTQ people\u00a0and also launched a new program to combat the alt-right online.\u00a0We’ve\u00a0leveraged Twitter<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0advocate\u00a0for gay<\/a> men<\/a> in\u00a0Chechnya,\u00a0worked with tech giants like YouTube\u00a0to\u00a0unblock LGBTQ content<\/a>, gone head to head with the\u00a0alt-right online<\/a>, and\u00a0spoken out against\u00a0dangerous artificial intelligence<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
