Co-founded by GLAAD and BiNet USA<\/a>, Bisexual+ Awareness Week seeks to accelerate acceptance of the bi<\/a>+ (pansexual, fluid, no label, queer, etc.) community. #BiWeek<\/a> draws attention to the experiences, while also celebrating the resiliency of, the bisexual<\/a>+ community. From September 17-24 this year, GLAAD highlighted the bisexual<\/a>+ community for #BiWeek, including Celebrate Bisexuality+ Day on September 23.<\/p>\n

“Make Wonder Woman Bisexual” petition reached over 5,600 signatures<\/h2>\n

The petition, created by GLAAD Campus Ambassador\u00a0Gianna Collier-Pitts<\/a>, was covered by amNew York<\/a>,\u00a0Teen Vogue<\/a>, MTV<\/a>,\u00a0New York Times<\/a>, and Huffington Post<\/a>, among others. In the petition to Warner Brothers<\/a>, Collier-Pitts states:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The majority of the LGBTQ+ community identifies as bisexual<\/a> or as having attraction to more than one gender, and yet it is the least understood of any identity. We are oversexualized and underrepresented. We are called greedy, dishonest, and confused. We are the least likely to come out and the most likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, on top of experiencing\u00a0higher rates of sexual\/intimate partner violence. We are made to feel invisible and in doing so we begin to see ourselves as invisible. Making Wonder Woman canonically bisexual<\/a> on the big screen would make her the first openly LGBTQ superhero of any gender from either DC or Marvel’s cinematic universes, and would solidify her place as a true role model for women<\/a> of all ages and identities.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For #BiWeek, we are highlighting the stories and work of bi+ trailblazers like Lani Ka’ahumanu\u00a0“As part of a BiPOL visibility action I registered with the DNC in 1984, and had a press conference in front of the convention center to announce I was running for Vice President of the USA. \u201cTippicanoe and Kaahumanu Too!\u201d We held the first Bisexual Rights Rally on the city provided protest stage. Mondale ended up choosing Geraldine Ferraro. I founded the first feminist bisexual activist group BiPOL with six other bisexuals. We were visible, outspoken and encouraged bisexuals within the lesbian and gay community to come out. Many lesbian and gay people including community leaders came out to me privately as bisexual but never had my back. As a bisexual elder I am sad to say my and the older generation have not changed.”<\/a><\/p>\n
