Russell Tovey to Star as Gay Superhero \u2018The Ray\u2019 in The CW\u2019s Arrow-verse Crossover<\/b><\/p>\n

The CW is planning a four-part crossover series of its Arrow<\/em>-verse this fall, airing on November 27 and 28, and they\u2019ve tapped out actor Russell Tovey to play gay<\/a> superhero The Ray. Additionally, Tovey will voice the character on the animated series based on the character which was announced in July<\/a>.<\/p>\n

EW reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The Ray first appeared in a 1973 issue of\u00a0Justice League of America<\/em>; the animated series\u2019 Ray will be closer to the version of the character in DC\u2019s\u00a0Multiversity<\/em>\u00a0series, which updated the Freedom Fighters to look more like current-day Americans.\u00a0Freedom Fighters: The Ray<\/em>\u00a0will debut on The CW\u2019s digital channel in 2017.<\/p>\n

Last year,\u00a0CW boss Mark Pedowitz hinted that The Ray would eventually show up in one of The CW\u2019s live<\/a>-action\u00a0Arrow<\/em>-verse shows \u2014 much like Megalyn E.K.\u2019s Vixen on\u00a0Arrow<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the character description for The Ray from July\u2019s announcement, as well as a trailer for the animated series.<\/p>\n

Raymond \u201cRay\u201d Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a \u201cgenetic light bomb.\u201d The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice \u2014 he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.<\/p>\n
