<\/a><\/p>\nThis week in New Music: Steve Albini helps\u00a0Metz<\/strong> to emerge from a dark, squalid hole;\u00a0Morrissey\u00a0<\/strong>is still at it;\u00a0Tricky<\/strong> (above) almost reaches the hypnotic heights of Maxinquaye;\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Blood Orange<\/strong> returns.<\/p>\n Metz \u2013 <\/b>Strange Peace<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Apparently recorded live<\/a> to tape, the album retains the hardcore, raging anger of their previous efforts but at times there is a relief in the noise that allows the songwriting to shine through.<\/span><\/p>\n Probably the most accessible song is \u201cLost in the Blank City\u201d \u2013 the squall survives but there are songs in there too.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Morrissey \u2013 \u201cSpent the Day in Bed\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n With new album\u00a0Low In High School<\/em> due out in November,\u00a0Morrissey<\/strong> has gifted the world<\/a> with lead track \u201cSpent the Day in Bed.\u201d<\/p>\n With a career spanning more than 30 years, its fair enough that Morrissey would have the odd miss. Since 2004\u2019s\u00a0You Are the Quarry<\/em>, it\u2019s nearly all<\/em> been a bit hit and miss.\u00a0Ringleader of the Tormentors<\/em> and\u00a0Years of Refusal<\/em> were pretty awful. Then came 2014\u2019s\u00a0World Peace is None of Your Business<\/em>. Despite the fact that it should have been edited down by three or four tracks and the Morrissey-shaped nonsense that led to the album being deleted, it was his best in a decade and included some actual Moz classics.<\/p>\n And so to \u201cSpent the Day in Bed.\u201d Speaking as a massive Morrissey fan, it\u2019s lame and lazy. It sounds like a b-side from the not brilliant\u00a0Kill Uncle<\/em>.<\/p>\n Stop watching the news! Oh please!<\/p>\n Can\u2019t wait for the album. Checking Spotify for gigs.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Tricky \u2013 <\/b>ununiform<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Warning signs\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n One of main problems with Tricky in the last decade or so is that he did away with the depth of the still-stunning debut <\/span>Maxinquaye<\/span><\/i> for something verging on standard. It\u2019s been said that the debut was so deep and so unique because Tricky didn\u2019t really know what he was doing in the studio. Fast forward 22 years and he\u2019s a professional and a grown up. But domestic bliss doesn\u2019t mean happy-clappy. How could it? Note the source.<\/span><\/p>\n An issue with <\/span>ununiform<\/span><\/i> is that, in production at least, it sounds somewhat thin. There are also some tracks that feel like afterthoughts. \u201cNew Stole\u201d is particularly average. However, when that\u2019s followed by \u201cWait For Signal,\u201d everything is forgiven. Tricky\u2019s unique voice is still haunting.<\/span><\/p>\n Probably the best song on the album is closing track \u201cWhen We Die.\u201d That its a collaboration with <\/span>Martina Topley-Bird<\/b> is telling. There are some great songs here. The cover of <\/span>Hole<\/b>\u2019s \u201cDoll Parts\u201d is just bizarre but just works. But missing is the intensity of his earlier work.
