NEW MUSIC: Tori Amos, Twin Peaks Soundtracks, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart<\/b><\/p>\n

This week in New Music:\u00a0Tori Amos<\/strong><\/a> is back in top,\u00a0top<\/em> form on\u00a0Native Invader<\/em>; two soundtracks for\u00a0Twin Peaks<\/strong><\/a> will haunt you for decades; and\u00a0The Pains of Being Pure at Heart<\/a><\/strong> do away with any notions of not being a pop band.<\/p>\n

\n

Tori Amos \u2013 <\/b>Native Invader<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"tori-amos\"<\/a>On her 18th studio album <\/span>Native Invader<\/span><\/i>, Queen <\/span>Tori Amos<\/b> is concerned with the environment, her Native American heritage, her mother\u2019s health issues and the shitty state America has found itself in since electing the Idiot in Chief.<\/span><\/p>\n

She is also, it appears, concerned with getting back to work proper on one of her best albums in many years.<\/span><\/p>\n

For me, <\/span>Scarlet\u2019s Walk<\/span><\/i> was the last time Amos really, <\/span>really<\/span><\/i> got it right. Here, from the opening bars of the sprawling piano ballad \u201cReindeer King\u201d she is on fire for 61 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are some almost-duds to be had. \u201cCloud Riders\u201d is a low point. However, the clear winners far outweigh the almost-rans: \u201cBroken Arrow\u201d is a classic Amos piano semi-ballad; the previously reviewed \u201cUp the Creek\u201d is an unsettling mix of classic rock, sweeping strings and electronica; \u201cBreakway\u201d and \u201cBang\u201d are pure genius Amos of old.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

Twin Peaks Limited Event Series Soundtracks<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Twin<\/a>Did you love it? Did you? Or did you think it was an ending so up in the air that you felt cheated? Or did you find that up in the air ending to be the perfect fuck<\/a>-me full stop to an epic 27 year journey? If you\u2019re a massive fan of\u00a0Twin Peaks<\/strong> (as I am) you are probably still ingesting what the hell just happened. Forget about it though \u2013 you\u2019ll never have an answer, it\u2019s all in your mind and the two albums of soundtracks will be there to haunt you for the rest of your days.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Limited Event Series<\/em>\u00a0Soundtrack<\/em> includes the tracks performed at the Roadhouse. If you\u2019ve already watched every episode a few times, most of these tracks will feel like home. All of these songs fit so perfectly into the Twin Peaks universe because David Lynch is absolutely responsible for each and every detail of each and every Roadhouse performance. Standouts? \u201cTarifa\u201d by Sharon Van Etten? \u201cShe\u2019s Gone Away\u201d which featured in\u00a0That Episode<\/em>. The brilliant \u201cNo Stars\u201d by Rebekah Del Rio.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the second part which includes mostly instrumental soundtracks from the series including a number of new atmospheric pieces by Angelo Badalamenti who scored the original series and\u00a0Fire Walk With Me<\/em>. There\u2019s much to love here, and much to make you cower behind the sofa.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccidental\/Farewell Theme\u201d is Evil Bob\/Laura\u2019s birth(?) scene. \u201cThe Chair\u201d is the most traditional Twin Peaks instrumental and featured heavily in the series. \u201cThernody, For the Victims of Hiroshima\u201d\u2026.well, what is there to say about That<\/em>\u00a0Episod<\/em>e? And then we close on \u201cDark Space Low,\u201d the closing track of the series which, like the series itself answers no questions and will never leave you alone again. Although we do have Mark Frost\u2019s\u00a0Final Dossier<\/em> to look forward to which is bound to explain everything. \"?\"\"?\"\"?\"<\/p>\n

Pretty good so.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart \u2013 <\/b>The Echo of Pleasure<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"Kip<\/a>From the opening seconds of <\/span>The Pain of Being Pure at Hearts<\/b>\u2019s debut self-titled album back in 2009, here was a band performing the perfect blend of low-fi indie rock with essentially pure pop. It sounded like it should have been drowned in feedback so when the band emerged as a more or less solo act for \u00a02014\u2019s <\/span>Days of Abandon<\/span><\/i>, it seemed fitting that and pretensions towards were gone. Actual pop was in and that continues through <\/span>The Echo of Pleasure<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

It would appear that the echo Kip Berman is referring to is his wife\u2019s pregnancy. Berman has said he thinks it\u2019s unlikely there will be another Pains\u2026. Album purely because the money isn\u2019t there to make it. It\u2019s a shame really \u2013 throughout the Pains\u2026. career there have been a number of songs that you could imagine the likes of Beyonce and Sia giving a good seeing to.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
