Australian PM Urges \u2018Yes\u2019 Vote on Gay Marriage: \u2018Lack of Commitment\u2019 Is the Only Threat to Marriage<\/b><\/p>\n

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull<\/strong><\/a> has urged people to vote in favor of same-sex<\/a> marriage in this month\u2019s non-binding postal ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turnbull has been the subject of <\/span>criticism<\/b><\/a> from fellow lawmakers, LGBT rights groups<\/a> and business interests for refusing to hold a vote in parliament. <\/span><\/p>\n

In a radio interview on Sunday, he said that marriage, same-sex<\/a> or otherwise, makes a country more unified.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Business Insider<\/b><\/a>, he added:<\/span><\/p>\n

The things that threaten marriages are lack of commitment. I mean marriage is all about commitment, so what threatens marriage? It\u2019s neglect, it\u2019s abandonment, it\u2019s adultery, it\u2019s basically losing that commitment \u2013 it\u2019s a lack of commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if two gay<\/a> people down the road, who are living together decide to get married, how does that threaten my nearly 38-year-old marriage to Lucy? Of course it doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n

If lack of commitment is the problem, then people showing commitment should be a positive, it actually would encourage other people to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean I know I sound like a very conservative person when I say this, but it\u2019s very heartfelt. I sincerely believe we would be a stronger nation if more people were married and fewer were divorced.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout all my life, I\u2019ve always encouraged, you know the \u2018singles\u2019 to get married, the \u2018marrieds\u2019 to stay married, you know, people who are straying to mend their ways, and those who have been wronged to forgive. I passionately believe in marriage and I think it is the bedrock of society.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if two gay<\/a> people who have got a commitment to each other and are living together and are supporting each other through life\u2019s ups and downs and tribulations and successes and everything else, why shouldn\u2019t we recognise that \u2013 the state, the government \u2013 recognise that as a marriage?<\/span><\/p>\n

Same-sex<\/a> marriage advocates are concerned that even if the postal ballot is in favor of same-sex<\/a> marriage, the issue would be sent back to Parliament, which could still reject it in a free vote.<\/span><\/p>\n
