This is especially true for LGBTQ parents who, in addition to bus runs and lunch money, have to worry about whether or not their children\u2019s families will be seen and included in all aspects of the school experience.<\/p>\n<p>As a former teacher and now Program Director of HRC\u2019s Welcoming Schools, it saddens me to hear parents say that they don\u2019t feel like they can fully participate in the school community or that they can\u2019t talk to the teacher openly about their own family. To be sure, there are many schools and educators who are fully inclusive and welcoming of all types of families, but there\u2019s much work still to be done. LGBTQ parents can be a part of changing school culture, and Welcoming Schools has resources to help them do just that.<\/p>\n<p>There are many <a href=\"\/\/assets.hrc.org\/\/welcoming-schools\/documents\/WS_Actions_LGBTQ_Parents_-_Guardians_Elementary_School.pdf\">actions LGBTQ parents can take<\/a> to support their children in elementary school. With your own child, it\u2019s important to build resilience and pride, discuss different types of families, and practice with them how to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcomingschools.org\/pages\/yes-they-are-a-family\/\">respond to questions about their family<\/a>. Take time at an open house or with a phone <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">call<\/a> to touch base with the teacher about how they address family diversity, name-calling, and bullying. In the larger school community, get involved \u2014 whether it\u2019s volunteering in your child\u2019s classroom, joining the PTA, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcomingschools.org\/pages\/family-education-and-community-building\/\">organizing a family program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An essential component of improving the school diversity climate is professional development for teachers. If staff have questions, direct them to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcomingschools.org\/\">Welcoming Schools website<\/a> for our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcomingschools.org\/resources\/school-tips\/diverse-families-what\/\">school resources<\/a>. Ask the principal about training for teachers, and encourage them to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcomingschools.org\/training\/\">request more information<\/a> about our program \u2014 or do it yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Please know that we at Welcoming Schools are here to support you. We know that families are children\u2019s first frame of reference for their world, and that they need to know that their families matter. With your help, we can make great strides in making schools safe, inclusive and welcoming for your children and for all children.<\/p>\n<p><em>Housed by the HRC Foundation, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.welcomingschools.org\/\"><em>Welcoming Schools<\/em><\/a><em> and <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/timetothrive.org\/\"><em>Time to THRIVE<\/em><\/a><em> are national programs to help LGBTQ youth succeed.
