NEW YORK –\u00a0<\/strong>GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today voiced outrage over President Trump\u2019s\u00a0pardon<\/a>\u00a0of former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio is infamous for his\u00a0previous conviction<\/a>\u00a0of issuing racist, anti-immigrant policies in Maricopa County even after being ordered by a judge to stop racial targeting and detaining undocumented immigrants without a legal basis.\u00a0Arpaio also gained national attention for his\u00a0inhumane Tent City jail<\/a>, which he\u00a0boasted<\/a>\u00a0was a \u201cconcentration camp,” and his relentless campaign to terrorize Latinx communities by using racial profiling for immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n

“This pardon is yet the latest example that bigotry and intolerance are core pillars of Trump’s Presidency,”\u00a0said Monica Trasandes, Director of Spanish Language and\u00a0Latinx<\/g>\u00a0Media & Representation.\u00a0<\/strong>“Trump is sending a chilling message of support for racial profiling, inhumane inmate abuses, and unlawful defiance for the federal court system. The LGBTQ community must stand with all immigrants and communities of color as we fight back against the dangerous and discriminatory agenda of the Trump Administration.”<\/p>\n

GLAAD\u00a0condemned<\/a>\u00a0President Trump’s defense of Joe Arpaio this Tuesday during his rally in Phoenix, Arizona where he stopped just short of announcing a pardon for Arpaio.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Williams Institute<\/a>, an estimated 267,000 adult undocumented immigrants identify as LGBTQ (Latinx, Black, Asian, and Muslim). Joe Arpaio\u2019s anti-immigrant ideology has created an environment in Arizona that increased the profiling, deportation, and detention of immigrants, including LGBTQ immigrants. Transgender immigrants are often disproportionately detained in immigration centers and suffer a\u00a0higher rate of abuse<\/a>.
