NEW MUSIC: Public Service Broadcasting, Broken Social Scene, Charli XCX, Bj\u00f6rk, Tegan and Sarah, The Smiths<\/b><\/p>\n

This week in New Music:\u00a0Public Service Broadcasting<\/b><\/a>\u2018s concept album\u00a0Every Valley<\/em> is ultimately uplifting and inspired,\u00a0Broken Social Scene<\/b>\u2018s\u00a0Hug of Thunder<\/em> is a series of ramshackle anthems and\u00a0Charli XCX<\/strong><\/a> goes all feminist on \u201cBoys\u201d \u2013 plus music news.<\/p>\n

\n

Public Service Broadcasting \u2013 <\/b>Every Valley<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"Public<\/a>Nice middle class London boys<\/a> <\/span>Public Service Broadcasting<\/b> are an unlikely lot to produce a concept album about the destruction of the coal-mining industry under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher, but here it is.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recorded in Ebbw Vale in Wales, the album\u2019s bleak subject matter entirely lends itself to the space funk of their previous album <\/span>The Race For Space<\/span><\/i> \u2013 it\u2019s close to post rock sparse at times but ultimately wide open and huge enough to suggest the general sense of despair within the coal mining community rather than the specifics of Thatcher\u2019s care free decimation of entire communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Richard Burton talking in 1980 about \u201cthe arrogant strut of the lords of the coalface\u201d to <\/span>Manic Street Preachers<\/b>\u2019 James Dean Bradfield urgency on \u201cTurn No More\u201d to the Beaufort male<\/a> choir on closing track \u201cTake Me Home,\u201d <\/span>Every Valley<\/span><\/i> could be depressing as all hell but leaves the listener with a curious sense of hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

Broken Social Scene \u2013 <\/b>Hug of Thunder<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"Broken<\/a><\/p>\n

Broken Social Scene<\/b>: either you are a huge fan, you maybe know it\u2019s a massive collective of sorts or you\u2019ve never heard of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s okay because <\/span>Hug of Thunder<\/span><\/i>, their first album in seven years, feels like the ultimate destination of a two-decade\u00a0trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former\/sometimes members like <\/span>Feist<\/b><\/a> are back for <\/span>Hug of Thunder<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Stars<\/b>\u2019 Evan Cranley seems to be at the fore with main man<\/a> Kevin Drew.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album is absolutely massive, every song is an anthem. With 15 members, it sounds like everyone threw in their ideas, all of them were accepted and somehow they all came together to form a delicious whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Charli XCX<\/b> \u2013 \u201cBoys\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

\"charli<\/a><\/p>\n

\"charli_xcx\"<\/a>On her latest track \u201cBoys\u201d, <\/span>Charli XCX<\/b> is hoping to \u201csubvert gender roles\u201d by basically objectifying men<\/a> in the video<\/a> in the usual arse-shaking female<\/a> role.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seems legit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re doing all the sexy things that girls<\/a> usually do in music videos<\/a>,\u201d she said. \u201cI just wanted to flip the male<\/a> gaze on its head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The video<\/a> features the likes of Joe Jonas, Wiz Khalifa, Will.i.am, Mark Ronson and Diplo.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a decent song but far from her best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Bj\u00f6rk<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has announced the imminent release of a new album to follow up 2015 work of utter genius Vulnicura<\/em>. <\/em>There is\u00a0pre-order page<\/a>\u00a0for vinyl and CD versions of the album.<\/p>\n

\"tegan<\/a>Tegan and Sarah<\/a>\u00a0(right) have announced\u00a0a fall acoustic tour to commemorate their breakthrough album The Con<\/em>. On the album\u2019s 10th anniversary last month, the duo also revealed plans for The Con X: Covers<\/em> on which 14 other artists will cover songs from\u00a0The Con<\/em>.\u00a0 The covers album is out on October 13th. All profits\u00a0will go to\u00a0The Tegan and Sara Foundation<\/a> which\u00a0works with LGBTQ girls<\/a> and women<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Due in October, a deluxe reissue of\u00a0The Queen Is Dead<\/em> by the\u00a0<\/strong>Smiths<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will include\u00a0the remastered original album, demos and early takes and some\u00a0newly mastered B-sides including \u201cRubber Ring\u201d\u00a0and \u201cAsleep\u201d.\u00a0The three-CD collection also includes the 13-track\u00a0Live In Boston<\/em>.<\/p>\n
