Tapped for State Department post, Brownback is avid <\/em>proponent of so-called \u201creligious exemptions\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

NEW YORK – <\/strong>GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released the following background information on Kansas Governor Sam Brownback\u2019s anti-LGBTQ record after President Donald Trump announced his nomination<\/a> for Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedoms at the U.S. State Department. If confirmed Gov. Brownback would lead the Office of International Religious Freedom<\/a>, a previously non-politicized post created to \u201cmonitor religious persecution and discrimination worldwide\u201d and \u201cdevelop programs to promote religious freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Brownback has imposed his anti-LGBTQ agenda on others. This included citing so-called \u201creligious exemptions\u201d to rescind discrimination protections<\/a> based on sexual orientation or gender identity in Kansas and voting against<\/a> LGBTQ hate crime protections. If approved, Gov. Brownback would bring his anti-LGBTQ record to an international stage.<\/p>\n

This appointment comes as the Trump Administration continues to hold closed-door meetings<\/a> with anti-LGBTQ activists at the White House and just days after Family Research Council President Tony Perkins<\/a> announced<\/a> on his radio show, Washington Watch<\/em>, that possible \u201creligious exemptions\u201d executive orders would come as early as this week.<\/p>\n
