Documentary Goes Behind the Scenes in Tokyo\u2019s Gay-for-Pay Male Brothel : WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

Boys for Sale <\/em>is\u00a0a\u00a0new documentary that explores the phenomenon of the\u00a0urisen<\/em>, or male<\/a> brothel, in Tokyo, in which male<\/a> sex<\/a> workers, also called urisen<\/em>, often\u00a0identify as straight yet make themselves available to an all-male<\/a> clientele for cash.<\/p>\n

Directed by Itako in his first effort, the 76-minute film made its North American screen debut at Outfest in Los Angeles earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Itako sat down with several of the sex<\/a> workers to gather impressions of their world. British magazine Gay Times<\/em> explains<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u00a0Itako visits famous gay<\/a> district Shinjuku 2 Chome\u00a0to sit down with several male<\/a> prostitutes \u2013 or \u201curisen\u201d \u2013 ranging from 19 to 30 years old, who discuss the ins and outs of their job in engrossing detail.<\/p>\n

The sexually explicit experiences\u00a0are presented as illustrations in a bid to represent all aspects of their lives on screen. Some of the boys<\/a> choose to hide their identity by donning masks to hide their faces, while others just don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

A large majority of the boys<\/a> feature claim to be straight, and some of them\u00a0have girlfriends<\/a>. When asked how they\u2019re able to sleep with men<\/a> who they aren\u2019t attracted to, one of the boys<\/a> answered: \u201cI\u2019m detached. My mind goes blank.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The boys<\/a> share how they got into the business of selling their bodies, with some explaining that they hadn\u2019t been dating at that time and they needed money. Many of them were homeless following being orphaned by natural disasters.<\/p>\n

It also touches on broader issues such as the country\u2019s hypocrisy when it comes to sex<\/a>, and the spread of the HIV virus, which is not acknowledged by the government.<\/p>\n

Itako also offers this vignette on the film\u2019s official website<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I followed my subject, a transgender woman<\/a>, into a dark bar hidden away on the second floor of a building in 2-chome. \u00a0\u201cFor only having a few seats, there are an awful lot of bartenders here,\u201d I thought, glancing at the 10 or so young guys<\/a> behind the bar.\u00a0 Opening what I thought was a drink menu, inside were photos of the young guys<\/a>, together with fact sheets detailing their ages (18-24), hobbies, body measurements and sexuality (mostly straight).\u00a0 Next to this was a list of sexual acts each was willing to do with men<\/a> and a price list.<\/p>\n

I needed to know more\u00a0\u2014 how they could claim to be straight but engage in sex<\/a> work with men<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but the only way to speak with the boys<\/a> was to purchase them and bring them upstairs to a sex<\/a> room\u2026<\/p>\n
