Rupert Everett Visits Public Toilets, Explores the UK\u2019s Changing Attitudes Toward Gay Sex in \u201950 Shades of Gay\u2019 \u2014 WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

Actor Rupert Everett tours Britain to revisit the nation\u2019s past when gay<\/a> sex<\/a> was criminalized in 50 Shades of Gay<\/em>, a\u00a0special program on the UK\u2019s Channel 4.<\/p>\n

The Guardian<\/em> reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Rupert intertwines his own story \u2013 family, sexuality, career \u2013 into this journey, which takes him back to old haunts, and old friends. There are characters in squeaky leather, dogs called Samson and Biscuit, a little Polari. He travels to Liverpool, to the set of Hollyoaks, to meet the actors \u2013 both gay<\/a> and straight \u2013 playing gay<\/a> characters and find out how that goes down (fine, especially among teenage<\/a> girls<\/a>, interestingly).<\/p>\n

And to the Lake District, where Paul is getting married to Graham. It\u2019s a fascinating picture of a country that has come a long way from undercover coppers lurking in public toilets, via strange contradictions and hypocrisies, to Paul\u2019s establishment Lakeland wedding. That\u2019s\u00a0Paul Burrell, who used to be Princess Diana\u2019s butler \u2013 and rock \u2013 incidentally.<\/p>\n

The problems of being gay<\/a> in Britain haven\u2019t gone away entirely. There are communities where the path to acceptance has been slower, the Jamaican one, for example, and the City of London. Two-thirds of graduates who have been openly gay<\/a> at uni go back into the closet when they go into business \u2013 as Lord Browne, who used to run BP, tells Rupert. Even today. That\u2019s extraordinary, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

Then there are new problems within the gay<\/a> community itself, brought about by apps: a loss of intimacy, pressure to conform in new ways, and the fact that all this bloody acceptance has actually led to a loss of community. There was solidarity in the shadows. Now being gay<\/a> is as dull as being straight.<\/p>\n
