NEW MUSIC: Amber Coffman, Bedouine, Palehound<\/b><\/p>\n

This week in New Music: Former\u00a0Dirty Projectors<\/strong> frontwoman\u00a0Amber Coffman<\/strong>\u00a0(above) pays tribute to her 90s heroes on her debut solo album, the debut from Aleppo-born\u00a0Bedouine<\/b> and Ellen Kempner moves up a grade on her second\u00a0Palehound<\/strong> album.<\/p>\n

Amber Coffman \u2013 <\/b>City of No Reply<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

On her debut solo album, former <\/span>Dirty Projectors<\/b> frontwoman <\/span>Amber Coffman<\/b> pays tribute to 90s pop rock and the women<\/a> of the genre who \u201cpartially raised\u201d her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gone from <\/span>City of No Reply<\/span><\/i> is Coffman\u2019s Dirty Projectors prog rock leanings in favor of classic rock with a touch of R&B.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find touches of everything from Carole King to Joni Mitchell<\/a> to Melissa Etheridge<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album was produced by former Dirty Projectors bandmate and former partner David Longstreth and the couple<\/a> have \u2013 apparently \u2013 since broken off all contact. That parallel with <\/span>Alanis Morissette<\/b><\/a>\u2019s <\/span>Jagged Little Pill<\/span><\/i> is worth noting. While <\/span>City of No Reply <\/span><\/i>is more hip than harsh, some heartbreaking love songs are hidden away in this immaculate collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Bedouine \u2013 <\/b>Bedouine<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"Bedouine\"<\/a>Bedouine aka Azniv Korkejian was born in Aleppo, brought up in Saudi Arabia and moved to the U.S. with her family as a teenager.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Amber Coffman, there is a timeless quality to her self-titled debut album, a homage to 60s and 70s folk and rock. Also like Coffman, the easiest reference point is Joni Mitchell. However, that throwback element is tempered with a contemporary touch much like <\/span>Laura Marling<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Palehound \u2013 <\/b>At Night I\u2019m Alright With You<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"palehound_aplaceillalwaysgo\"<\/a>Boston singer-songwriter <\/span>Ellen Kempner<\/b> aka <\/span>Palehound<\/b> has graduated from DIY lo-fi garage rock to a more nuanced sound for her second album <\/span>At Night I\u2019m Alright With You<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Much like the two albums above, Kempner\u2019s is again indebted to classic indie rock with a contemporary edge (<\/span>Haley Bonar<\/b> springs to mind).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although tempered compared with debut <\/span>Dry Food<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>At Night I\u2019m Alright With You<\/span><\/i> is brittle enough for indie rock fanboys and fangirls to fall in love with.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
