Halfway through the year, and with Spider-Man about to swing in, it\u2019s time to take stock of the movies of 2017. Get Out<\/em> and Wonder Woman<\/em> aside, the screen hits that most captured the zeitgeist were streaming this year \u2014 Big Little Lies<\/em> and The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> anyone?<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s\u00a0never a \u2018bad\u2019\u00a0film year. You just need to pay close attention to catch the gems as the blockbusters these days are nearly all \u201cbrand\u201d driven. With notable exceptions franchise films are\u00a0rarely the films that people still care about once the dust has settled. I mean you could see a new Transformers<\/em>\u00a0or Pirates<\/em>\u00a0or Cars<\/em> movies but you\u2019d be much better off with The Big Sick<\/em>, one of the most\u00a0likeable romantic comedies in years, or\u00a0renting the exquisite\u00a0Frantz<\/em> from gay<\/a> french auteur Fran\u00e7ois Ozon.<\/p>\n

There are too many ways in which we could randomly \u201creview\u201d the year\u2019s first half, so let us choose the way of eye candy.<\/p>\n
