Nicholas Galitzine Finds Breakout Role in Gay-Themed \u2018Handsome Devil\u2019 \u2013 INTERVIEW<\/b><\/p>\n

Nicholas Galitzine as star athlete Conor in \u201cHandsome Devil\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The third time is the charm. Just three years and three films into his acting career, Nicholas Galitzine<\/a> has what looks like a breakout role. The Irish dramedy HANDSOME DEVIL<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0centers around the unlikely friendship of a new student Ned (Fionn O\u2019Shea) and the star athlete Conor (Galitzine) at a rugby-mad boarding school. Their friendship is encouraged by their teacher Mr Sherry\u00a0(played by the gay<\/a> Irish actor Andrew Scott of\u00a0Pride<\/em> and Sherlock <\/em>fame) but the rugby team isn\u2019t wild about it. Conor\u00a0is a wonderful showcase for Galitzine\u2019s talent, and in more ways than one. The role also\u00a0allows the actor to\u00a0use\u00a0what he calls<\/a> \u201cmy separate passion,\u201d his music.<\/p>\n

Screen International\u00a0named Galitzine\u00a0one of their \u201cStars of Tomorrow\u201d in 2015 as part of\u00a0their annual feature promoting the UK\u2019s most promising actors. Their prediction is looking sound. \u201cI\u2019ve been very lucky so far,\u201d he admits with genuine graciousness. He\u2019s eager to test his range and thrilled to be working with and learning from great actors like Andrew Scott. \u00a0Our interview follows\u2026<\/p>\n

Fionn O\u2019Shea and Nicholas Galatzine as unlikely friends in HANDSOME DEVIL<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Handsome Devil<\/em>\u00a0is really good.\u00a0One of the key themes is finding your own voice.<\/span>\u00a0Andrew Scott has that great line\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou spend your whole life being somebody else, who\u2019s gonna be you?\u201d Do you relate to that search to discover who you really are?<\/strong><\/p>\n

NICHOLAS GALITZINE: It\u2019s a universal theme that a lot of young people identify with. It\u2019s really difficult to stay away from all of those voices and similarities in the mainstream. You grow up kind of wanting to be like someone else and you try and recreate that. It leads to you being an inauthentic person in some ways. It\u2019s not just if you\u2019re a musician or an artist, It\u2019s an issue of identity and being true to yourself. I think everyone is part of a school clique in high school or wherever \u2014 maybe you get roped into a way of thinking.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In the film\u00a0there\u2019s something kind of tragic about this weird vicious cycle of machismo that all these boys<\/a> buy into. They don\u2019t really know why they do it. Hopefully Handsome Devil<\/em> will shed a light on that and help young people realize it\u2019s more than okay to be different. It\u2019s actually pretty fucking<\/a> cool.<\/p>\n

The film hasn\u2019t really been advertising itself as a gay<\/a> film, so I was surprised when I saw it as a festival\u00a0last year. Have you learned a lot about LGBT issues and discussed it a lot at Q&As by this point?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a huge theme in the film so people ask about it a lot. Just before we filmed this the referendum came out in Ireland that they were going to give gay<\/a> people the right to marry. That was a huge thing in that country. It is really lovely to see how passionate members of the gay<\/a> community are and how much this means to them . We had a mother at the last screening. She was saying \u2018I have a gay<\/a> daughter and this really touched me in a big way because it\u2019s all about being true to who you are.\u2019 I hope that there are other other gay<\/a> and LGBTQ teens<\/a> who see this and feel compelled to speak out and be true to themselves.<\/p>\n

I come from a very multicultural background. Being a Londoner you kind of grow up with every type of person around you so you\u2019re more comfortable with anything. But maybe people from other communities\u2026<\/p>\n

\"Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a large music element to\u00a0Handsome Devil<\/em>\u00a0and you sing and play guitar beautifully\u00a0[See his\u00a0Instagram account<\/a>].\u00a0 Does that mean you\u2019re popular on\u00a0set, people making you pick up the guitar between setups?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

GALITZINE: [Laughter] There\u2019s a little bit of that, a little bit of jamming that we did on set. And a little bit of rugby playing as well! I was going to be a rugby player as a career. But every time I picked up a ball I had the producers shouting at me because I was going to get injured in some way or another. But it\u2019s actually funny because we were supposed to do this shot [with a high speed camera tractor]. We did this rehearsal and I knew this move wasn\u2019t going to work. They almost ended up breaking my legs. The producers won\u2019t be happy with me telling that story but it\u2019s funny looking back on it now because they wouldn\u2019t let me even touch a ball but they\u2019d almost run me over.\u00a0 <\/span>The irony is oh so sweet.<\/p>\n

\"\"What kind of roles would you really love to play next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I really just want to play multi-faceted characters. There\u2019s a darkness inside me that makes me want to play a psychopath or something like that. Tom Hardy did it so well in Bronson<\/em>, playing an unhinged character. It\u2019s kind of getting past the way people might look at my face to\u00a0convince on the character side.<\/p>\n

About that face. Obviously you\u2019re leading man<\/a> attractive. Do you think you\u2019ve lost jobs because you\u2019re too<\/em> pretty?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t view myself in that way but I notice it\u2019s the way I\u2019m perceived. The second film I did [High Strung<\/em>] was down to an aesthetic that was appealing to teenager girls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I think a lot of actors go through this: You look a certain way \u2014 the genes that your mum and your dad gave you \u2014 and there\u2019s a character which you know<\/em> you could bring 100%, the audition has gone really well, but at the end of the day it comes down to aesthetics.\u00a0 <\/span>Some times they want someone with a different shaped nose or whatever. They have a very specific image in mind.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s something you have to take with a pinch of salt as an actor and just keep on throwing yourself into the mix time and time again. If you keep throwing stuff against the wall, one day it\u2019s going to stick. That\u2019s been my philosophy so far.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
