U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley condemns LGBTQ attacks in Chechnya<\/b><\/p>\n

Last week GLAAD \u2013 the world\u2019s LGBTQ media advocacy organization \u2013 released a public call urging U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley to condemn<\/a> the violent attacks on LGBTQ men<\/a> in Chechnya and investigate reports of anti-LGBTQ concentration camps set up by the Chechen government. GLAAD\u2019s public call<\/a> received widespread support on Twitter. Today Ambassador Haley released a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to be disturbed by reports of kidnapping, torture, and murder of people in Chechnya based on their sexual orientation and those persecuted by association. If true, this violation of human rights cannot be ignored \u2013 Chechen authorities must immediately investigate these allegations, hold anyone involved accountable, and take steps to prevent future abuses.<\/p>\n

We are against all forms of discrimination, including against people based on sexual orientation. When left unchecked, discrimination and human rights abuses can lead to destabilization and conflict.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow, the United States will lead a first-ever meeting on human rights in international conflicts in the UN Security Council to underscore our commitment to addressing human rights abuses wherever they threaten international peace and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

GLAAD responded:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attacks on LGBTQ men<\/a> and reports of concentration camps in Chechnya were beyond horrific, and Ambassador Haley is taking the right step in speaking out against these blatant violations of human rights,\u201d said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President and CEO<\/strong>. \u201cThis is a powerful sign that the U.S. Mission to the United Nations will continue to prioritize LGBTQ acceptance and fight discrimination and human rights abuses around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

GLAAD\u2019s call<\/a> to action for Ambassador Haley to speak out followed reports that more than 100 LGBTQ men are being detained<\/a> in Russian-controlled Chechnya because of their perceived sexual orientation, with three men<\/a> allegedly being killed. Last week, international media outlets including the International Business Times released disturbing stories<\/a> around two suspected concentration camp-style prisons<\/a> where the men<\/a> are forced to endure many forms of physical and verbal abuse at the hands of government officials including electrocution and violent beatings. Some are reportedly being held from their families at ransom.<\/p>\n

In addition to Ambassador Haley\u2019s remarks, other world leaders have also publicly condemned Chechnya\u2019s reported torture on LGBTQ men<\/a>.<\/p>\n
